Public vs Charter School
Can someone please explain to me the difference.
Also, if you have any experience with a Charter school (good or bad) please share!

Re: Public vs Charter School
Charter schools are publicly funded (which is a debate in itself) but privately run. The principal of each school is basically an emperor of his/her little kingdom. They can, and do, ask teachers to perform many non-teaching duties. Things like prep periods are at the discretion of the administration. School years and instructional days may start earlier and end later than public schools.Teachers in charter schools are typically not unionized. Salaries are usually comparable.

Re: Public vs Charter School
My friend works at a charter school and she works ALL the time. She also get very little prep time, so it all has to be done outside of school

Re: Public vs Charter School
I believe charter school teachers earn more BUT work longer hours. They are not unionized and therefore not protected and can be fired at any time. From what I know of charter schools I would much rather be in a public school.

ITA. Some charters do pay better, but not all. The hours for many are something like 7:30-5:30.
No type of job protection (but the UFT can't seem to give that up quick enough ) and no pension. No maternity leave either.

Re: Public vs Charter School
So, if your only option for possibly teaching next school year was at a charter school would you still do it?
From what I have been seeing, they tend to have a "harder" application process.

Re: Public vs Charter School
I would and I'd check out about the particular charter school b/c while I don't work at a charter school, I work at a private on the island and we own a charter in the city, and some of the things listed here aren't true for this particular charter.

Re: Public vs Charter School
i work in a charter school. the school day is from 8-4pm. very long day. no union and you could quit or get fired anytime which already has happened to someone being fired. same school vacations as a public school and summers off so that is a plus. salary wise not really sure how comparable it is to the actual district in terms of raises and things like that but it's good experience.

Re: Public vs Charter School
Remember that charter schools are run by Wall Street hedge fund managers. They're a for-profit institution.
So it's very much about the "bottom line," or measurable improvement (ie test scores) and getting the most bang for your buck. Depending on your view of education, that's either a good or a bad thing.
