Pumping Mom.. pumping every 2/3 hours for the first six weeks to build supply... then what?
What happens at the six week mark? Please tell me I don't have to pump in the middle of the night and can pump only when I'm totally engorged? When do you pump after this six week "pumping bootcamp" is over?
Right now I nurse DD 2/3x a day and pump on an every 2/3 hour schedule. I am DYING for this to end, it's way too much pressure. Almost at the 5 week mark....

I would like to know too. I pump when i feel like I am gorging and feed formula at night. Today I decided to pump every 3 hours and I only produced 1 oz. but when I am gorging I produce 5 oz.

It depends.... what are your goals?
If you want to exclusively pump, then you're going to need to pump as often as your LO is eating. That can be every 2 hours, then as they get older... every 2.5 hours, every 3 hours, every 4 hours, etc.
If you're pumping and BFing... then you can BF whenever your LO is hungry and pump at times when you don't want to BF (and will give a pumped bottle)
Is your LO sleeping through the night already?

I exclusively pumped for 6 months now. Still going. The LC said once you produce over 32 ounces you can start dropping a feeding. I pump three times a day. I tried twice but it messed up my supply.

I don't know if I would wait until you are totally engorged. Your supply for sure will dip then. You could probably stretch to 4 hours, then maybe 5 but I don't know how much more than that I would go that early on.

ITA. In the beginning, I was pumping every 2-3 hours. By around 7 weeks, it was every 3 hours during the day and between 4-5 hours overnight, depending on how tired I was (DS was sleeping about 5-6 hours each night at this point). It was a pain, but unfortunately necessary if you plan to EP long term IMO. Hang in there

Re: Pumping Mom.. pumping every 2/3 hours for the first six weeks to build supply... then what?
I agree with PP. I think it depends on what your goal is. I've been exclusively pumping for about 7.5 weeks now and I pump every time my DS eats so about every 4 hours. If he gets up in the middle of the night, DH feeds him and I pump. If not, then I just wait until the morning. Actually pumping in the middle of the night increased my supply, I'll get 8-9 oz in about 20 mins then get 9-10 oz 5 hours later when DS wakes up for the day. If your DC is sleeping through the night then you may not need to pump in the middle of night.

Re: Pumping Mom.. pumping every 2/3 hours for the first six weeks to build supply... then what?
When you guys ask what my goal is, what do you mean? Whether or not I plan on EPing? Or have supply>demand.
It's tough for me to estimate and pump whenever she'd eat because she is a cluster feeder. She has 4-5 HUGE feedings a day and that's it, which isn't feasible for pumping because that would be like every 6 hours.
I still only get 2-3.5 ounces per pump session at 5 weeks, is that low?

Re: Pumping Mom.. pumping every 2/3 hours for the first six weeks to build supply... then what?
With DS, I started EPing when he was 2 m//o. I pumped every 2-3 hrs during the day, and every 4-5 overnight. When he hit 3 months old, I gradually started going longer between sessions, little by little. By the time he was about 4 m/o, I was pumping only 3 times a day: morning, late afternoon and before bed. I would get 8-10oz per session.
Now with DD, I have been EPing since she was 1 week old. She is now almost 7 weeks...I pump every 3-4 hours, and once overnight. I get the most milk in the morning and right before bed, normally 7oz. All the other times I get 4-6oz. My goal is to gradually increase the time between sessions and drop the night pumping like I did with DS, but not just yet. I would wait a little longer before you start dropping sessions....hang in there!
