Puppy advice needed- Getting 9 week old NEXT Saturday.
We just got a call from a breeder in Tenasee that he has a puppy. He is 9 week old.
(side note, this is legit, good breeding, helath, temperment, not taken away from mom too soon etc).
So. We both work, but my DH workes 3 miles from the house. *IF* we get the puppy, I want some advice about crating during the day.
1. We dont know, yet, if the dog is mostly house broken.
2. I wake up at 7 and can take the dog out. DH wake up at 9:30 and does not leave for work till about 11am.
3. He would come home at 2 to let the dog out.
4. He is home at 5:30 or so.
So is it ok, mean, cruel, to crate a dog for a few hours during the day?
I'm looking for honest answers. Once the dog is house broken we would have no problem giving the dog the run of the house.
ETA: We would drive to pick up the dog!

Re: Puppy advice needed- may be getting one today (saturday)
No you could crate a dog long than that depending on how old it is. Our dog trainer said that a dog can learn to hold itself for 8ish hours.

1) No matter what anyone tells you, a 9 week old dog is a baby and cannot be even CLOSE to house broken. It will need a lot of patience and training. Their bladders are small and will need to potty at least every 4 hrs.
2) Not mean at all to crate a puppy if you leave him SAFE toys, blankies, water if its hot, etc. But keeping in mind that a puppy (esp if you leave water) will need to a break from the crate about every 3 hrs or so to be brought out to go potty. Personally I never left my dogs in their crates more than a 3 hr stretch (at that age) without a potty break outside. Their little bladders just cant handle it, just think of a human baby peeing all the time. Thats what puppies do.
3) I did crate my dogs until about 9 mths and 1 year. Depends on the dog, how destructive they become during puppyhood, how much energy they have and how much exercise they get. But my dogs were never crated more than 3 or 4 hrs without being let out. When I was home, I tethered them to me and/or was alwyas with them taking them out to learn potty.
What else...hmmm...do you plan to do wee wee pads? I never did and dont recommend them b/c then that becomes another habit you have to break. And I do believe dogs can get confused do I go inside or outside? My dogs have always been great with not going in the house and I think no wee wee pads is why.
I think based on yours and your DHs hours, it can work out great. Your puppy will never be alone for more than a few hrs at a time. Thats great. Puppies really need socialization, not to be left alone everyday all day with all this energy and no one to play with. Also def not mean for a dog to be alone a few hrs a day! Thats ok but I dont think its fair when puppies are left alone for a full work day, all day, everyday. They do get bored and lonely (and therefore destructive). Your plan sounds good honestly.
Anything else I can help you with, ask.

Right but thats only when they get larger and older and their bladders mature.
My male dog became "potty trained" with my training him all day, everyday, by the time he was about 5 mths. My female, again, all day, everyday (I wasnt working) took ONE YEAR. She knew what to do but had bladder issues (could not hold it, even now trickles pee when she gets excited). So it took her ONE WHOLE year to gain control. It was so sad for her, she tried to hold it but could not. For a couple of mths, I was literally taking her out 12 times a day b/c I didnt want her to resort to peeign in the house, but she just could not hold it. Unfortunately even know, she gets infections a bit easier (something is probably wrong genetically with her urinary tract, etc).
So my point is, its a gamble but if you go by their age...rule of thumb is they can hold it as many hrs as their age. So 2 mths, 2 hrs, 4 mths, 4 hrs, and so on.

Re: Puppy advice needed- Getting 9 week old NEXT Saturday.
Thanks. We have other options. By DH owns his business so he can take the dog to the office.
We are also looking at letting him have the run of the kitchen if we put baby gates up. Will have his crate with SAFE toys etc in case he wants to hang.
We will also make SURE that kitchen is puppy proof, and SAFE.
But my DH can DEF come home during the da. I would NOT get the puppy if he wasnt able to.
I WILL have questions. I have never had a pet before and my DH grew up with them. SO he is very experienced. I have to learn, but I get it.

Dh and I never had dogs (I had cats) until we got our dog (now 2). So we had to do a lot of reading and research. So any ? ask away!
Sounds like you have a good plan in mind.

Thanks Goob! We are commited to being good puppy parents. I have watched enough TV shows (its me or the dog, etc) to know that bad behavior is, mostly, the parents fault.
We are ready for the challenge and take it very seriosly.
THANK YOU!!!!

I flew in the cabin with my pup when I got him. We had a stopover too! He was squished in the Sherpa bag a lot longer than I would have liked. :o(

It's not mean or cruel at all. I was wary of it at first, too, but honestly, my dog Lucy loves her crate. She goes in there all the time to hang out. Anytime you give her a toy or a treat or anything, she races into her crate with it! It's too funny! Good luck and congrats!!

The only words of warning I have about this is that it's 'easier' to house break if they have a small area to be in - as in the old saying that they won't "go" where they sleep.
He'll have to learn to hold it by being in the crate as he won't want to sleep in it... I fould the crates very helpful in having a smoothe house breaking with both of my pups.
(Now keep in mind this doesn't work with all dogs... my first baby (16 yrs ago) didn't mind sleeping in it! But I've house broken 4 dogs and he was the only one who 'broke' the rule)

Re: Puppy advice needed- Getting 9 week old NEXT Saturday.
We (well actually DH)didnt want a crate for Shamrock for the same reason- we thought it would be cruel to keep him locked up. We tried just gating him in the kitchen-he ate the wall paper. We tried a play -pen type of thing- he knocked it down. So we ended up using a crate and let me tell you its the best thing ever! We are gone from 6am to 3pm - he has learned to hold it till we get home. Yes he did cry at first but only for 2 nights. Now he only cries at night if he has to go out- usually around 3-3:30. We have been using this for about 2 1/2 weeks and he likes going in there now.
Dont worry about it- DH had the same reservations as you do and it is working out fine now
