Puppy outside in the yard question
Napoleon is 4 months old When we go outside, he will not stay out there by himself. If I come in to go to the bathroom or anything- he starts crying and scratching on the door. Im kind of "new" to the whole puppy thing (when I was younger and lived at home we had puppies but I was a kid so it didnt phase me what they did and stuff) Is this normal? Anyone else's dogs do this? We have had him for 8 days :) Any tips?
Thanks

Re: Puppy outside in the yard question
Tip - Puppies cannot be left outside alone! They need someone to watch them. They will eat things. They will play. They will not go to the bathroom.
They need to be taught that OUTSIDE is for the bathroom, if that is what you are trying to accomplish. So someone needs to stay with the pup and then take him back in when he does his business.
Puppies cannot be left alone outside for a long time, most of them just play and come back in and do their business in the house b/c they weren't guided outisde to do the right thing. Once you develop habits and a routine, and the puppy hopefully grows out of hte eating all sorts of stuff stage, then and only then can the pup/dog be outside on his own. It's kind of equivalent to letting a 2 year old run around your yard unsupervised or teaching a kid to go potty by just sitting them in the bathroom. They need our guidance. There are some great puppy books out there that will address all of this, for first time puppy owners.

Agree with Goobster. Puppy can also dig a hole and get out or slip through a part of fence (or get stuck!).
And even with our adult dogs, some of them just didn't want to be outside for anything other than potty, others would lay out in the sun all day and never want to come in.

Re: Puppy outside in the yard question
We never left Misty outside alone for the reasons Goobster stated. Even now, she's not much into being outside alone for any period of time. She basically goes out, does her business and comes back in - unless there is a small animal to chase.
