Q about disability and maternity leave

can any new mother (who is not working) get paid disability from NYS after the baby is born? I am a teacher - but never heard of this until I was searching under another topic and saw something describing. Anyone have any info? I wouldnt want to turn down 170. a week if it's out there for us!

Re: Q about disability and maternity leave

ask your place of work for disability forms. it's 2 pages you fill out a small part your dr. fills out a part and then give back to your job and they fill out there part and they'll mail it to disability office. If you having a c-sect you can collect for 8weeks if it's a vaginally birth it's for 6 weeks. check with your drs office to see when you should bring in the paperwork there is a time frame.

I don't think you can get it if you're not working. It goes through your employer since they are actually paying the insurance premiums for you (and you pay a small portion through a payroll deduction).

I won't be eligible because I am using my sick days to get paid during the FMLA period. You can't double dip and be paid through disability and your salary.

Re: Q about disability and maternity leave

it depends..does your employer have a private plan or go through the state?

typically you can get paid for the amount of time your doctor has you as medically disabled - for example, the first 6 weeks after a v-birth or 8 weeks after a c-section.

I work in a school. I plan on using all of my accumulated sick days and then take FMLA. I am not sure if you can collect disability during FMLA. I do know it's a very small amount of money.
