Where I grew up we NEVER had proms at the school.
We always went to catering halls - which are far and few between up there!

My Jr Prom was in a catering hall, just went to one on SI (DH teaches there) and it was at a golf course country club
ETA: My Jr Prom wasn't school sponsored, but others that were, were also in catering halls

our jr prom was at the school in the gym... we drove there but took a bus to a party boat afterwards (it was a nightmare, I had my first drinking experience there, I can't even describe how sick I got over the side of the boat)

we had a jr. banquet.. it was in the school cafeteria. I don't think anyone took limos, but I could be mistaken.

We took a limo to my prom which was at the Radison, which I think now is the giant Marriot on the LIE.
That was 1994.
Senior banquet was at a place too, but no limo's.

We got limo's, but our Jr. prom (actually it was a Jr. Banquet) was in the gym.

Our prom was for Juniors and Seniors. Not many Juniors went to it though.
It was always held off-site. The post-prom party was held in the gym.

My Junior Prom in 1993 was at a catering hall, we took a big bus to get there no limos, but it was in a nice place.

Jr prom (1989) was at the school gym) and it was very informal, what with the "Welcome to the Jungle" theme LOL...
Sr prom (1990) was at some catering hall - can't for the life of me, remember which.
