Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
Born and bred, and have never left Queens including - all schooling (elem to college) - married in Queens - moved around to various neighborhoods (but still in Queens) - currently most of my family is in a 10 mile radius of each - we will stay in Queens because DH owns a restaurant here and works many late & long hours so I wouldn't want him to have a long commute
Looks like I'm a 718er for life

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
I'm a born and bred New Yorker (as are my parents), and wherever I've lived, I've always felt as if I was a New Yorker. Even though I doubt I'll be here forever, I think I'll always be a New Yorker... and New York will always be "home."

I think there is a difference between saying your a New Yorker b/c you feel it in your blood
and saying you're a New Yorker b/c you and 6 of your friends from Providence rented a flat in Soho, and it's SOOOO COOOOLLL to be able to say that you live in NY..
anyone follow me?
I mean...really...some people that call themselves New Yorkers would have been eaten alive by the New York that was just a few years ago.
i see what you mean. and i do agree.

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
Im a New Yorka.. I was born and raised, and my accent irks the sh!t out of my DH (who is from NJ) so I have proof. Unfortunately, now i live in NJ where my kids will prob end up being Jersey-ites.
I am not going to lie, it annoys me sometime for the ppl who moved to NYC from out of state and lived here for 3 yrs to consider themselves NY'ers because they know all the restaurants in manhattan. Sorry charlie

i actually think the circumstances must be extreme and it is very rare to consider one of these people a new yorker

yeah I wont buy it. I think if you want to become an honorary NY'er you need to get approval or ny citizenship from a mean bred New Yorker like myself.

Born and bred.
I wouldn't call myself a southerner if tomorrow I picked up and moved to Georgia, right?

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
Sadly, I no longer consider myself a *true*New Yorker. I've been gone 8 years and have totally lost my accent. I also CANNOT drive in NY anymore- I've become a big wussy.
When people ask, I tell people I was raised in NY, but I certainly don't identify with the people in Maryland (where I live now).
I miss aspects of living in NY, but I am glad I left.
BUT- I am still a pizza and bagel SNOB.... that has to count for SOMETHING!!!

I think it's when you have made your home here at one point. I don't think it's because you were born here.
By home, I mean thrived, lived, laughed and cried...
I like that definition. I think you'd have to make your home in NY for a substantial amount of time though.

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
You true blue NYers will love this one.
When I was working as a flight attendant, the whole crew (including pilots) except for ONE girl was born and raised in NY (LI, Manhatten, Queens, respectfully). The odd woman out was born and raised in Birmingham,AL. However, she did currently live in LI with her husband.
During a ground stop with passengers onboard, we all got to talking to this passenger who noticed the "southerner's" accent and asked where she was from. To which she replied "New York".
Man, she got BLASTED by all of us. She needed schooling on what was *required* to be allowed the priviledge of saying one was from New York.

As a "foreign" person, I don't think I will ever be a real NYer (maybe in spirit but never accepted as a real one). NYers are very different. You just know you met a NYer when you met one. Just like you know you met a true Texan or true Californian.
That being said, I feel I totally belong here. This is my environment as the City person I was raised.

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
It's a part of who you are. My dad is a Bronx boy no matter where he lives. If you met him I do not think you would argue that. He hasn't lived in the Bronx since the early 1960s.
Some people who are not from NY do have some NY in them. My cousin in Holland has a lot of NY in him, KWIM?

I'm a NYer
DH on the other hand... he has only been living here for 4.5 yrs and refuses to say or admit that he's a NYer now it's not his cup of tea

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
This is a very interesting topic to me.
I was born and raised in Brooklyn and I think that I identify with being a "Brooklynite" much more than being a "New Yorker." A New Yorker could be raised on the Upper East Side and go to prep school and shop at all of the fancy stores on 5th ave whereas I grew up playing on the abandoned railroad tracks by Brooklyn College and hanging out at the dead end with the kids from my block. To me, you have to have been IN from day one (or VERY shortly thereafter) it to be considered a real Brooklyn Girl or Boy.
It really annoys me that I am getting priced out of Brooklyn. Williamsburg, where I was not raised, but lived briefly with DH before we were married has become, IMO, the most annoying place on Earth because of all of the out of towners moving in who think they run the place (very territorial and childish, i know, i know...) and are driving up the cost of everything because they will rent a dump with no bathroom sink on a shiitty block for 2 grand a month (or more!). DH and I currently live in Park Slope (he is from Connecticut, I am slowly moving him south... ) and it is not as annoying but soooooooooooo expensive. We will have to move out of here shortly after DC is born--so ironic--the best neighborhood to raise a family and we won't be able to afford it once we have a family...
Anyway, I know I am rambling, but I guess my point is, even people who are born and bred in Manhattan aren't, in my opinion, as true "New York" as the folks from the outer boroughs. I also think that people can assimilate into Manhattan culture with a lot more ease because it has become so bland.

Let me put it this way. In the theatre biz, everyone is from somewhere else, and my bio ALWAYS begins with "Jennifer is a proud NYC native"
Born and raised.

I have to say it's in your blood...I currently live in PA, but, I was born in Brooklyn and lived there for 31 years and I still feel like a New Yorker...I don't think I could ever consider myself a Pennsylvanian...LOL...

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR
By "New Yorker" do you mean just the 5 Burroughs and Long Island? I consider anybody born and raised in the state of New York a New Yorker. My mother is from Syracuse/Fayetteville--she's a New Yorker. My DH was born in Brooklyn and raised both there and on the Island--he's a New Yorker. Recently, an older southern woman asked me where my DH is from. I said NY. She was shocked because "he has such beautiful manners and speaks so well!"

DH and I were born and raised in Manhattan! We would love to do the same for our DC but it is not possible. So this UES couple will be heading North to the Bronx to live amongst the Irish in Woodlawn! We are excited and nervous at the same time!

I was born in NY (only one in my immediate family). I lived here until I was 18, went to college (in Michigan) then returned. I always have been and always will be a New Yorker.
