I have soooo much running through my head right now, I hope I can get it all out without rambling too much.
No. I don't think that you are doing your kid a disservice by not having a video game system. I think the ULTIMATE disservice would be to disregard your own experience, your knowledge of your son's behavior and your parental instincts in order to allow him to 'keep up' with the latest trends and toys of his peers.
My son has a PS2 and a Wii. His play time is limited and can be adjusted up or down depending on his behavior, schoolwork, etc.. He usually plays a half hour to 45 minutes a day on days that he actually gets to play. Some of his friends have more lenient parents and more play time - so they are better at the games since they play them more. When he has play dates he is not usually the 'best' player there - even though he often has had experience with the games. It hasn't caused any issues and it doesn't alienate him in any way. If I were to not allow him to play at his friends house - that might have a weird effect - but the fact that he isn't always the best player in the bunch doesn't really pose too many problems.
I think the biggest thing is teaching your children that these things are PRIVILEGES rather than rights. Children should be able to expect healthy food, a warm place to sleep, a safe environment and unconditional love.. but they are not entitled to the newest video game or the latest gadget. It sounds to me like you are teaching your son exactly right.

You have to do what you feel is right for your family. We have no video games in our home. My son is 5. I would NEVER have a trampoline either. Many, many people do. That doesn't make them wrong to me, just different. I just don't find any value in video games. just my opinion.
