Question about a concert ticket and a friend backing out...
I made plans way back in April I think to have a bunch of friends go see Justin Timberlake in August. Everyone was totally in and excited. I got $$ from everyone, got the tickets and we're ready (and so excited) to go!!
Well, a couple of weeks ago and friend of mine decided that she didn't think she would be able to go. She has already given me money and everything. She asked if I would be able to find someone to take her ticket. And if I couldn't find anyone, she would just eat the cost of the ticket. So far, I can't find anyone... is it right for me to just let her eat the cost of the ticket? I can't afford to eat the cost of the ticket myself, but I didn't commit to going and then back out.
What would you do?

I would keep looking, but if not she should eat the cost of the ticket. That's not your problem.

continue to try and find someone, I would bring the ticket to the concert wtih me and try to sell outside. If still no buyers, return ticket to friend. I would not give her money back.

IMO, you shouldnt be the one to lose money because of it, nor should you be responsible to find a replacement.
I planned a weekend in AC with friends - and one backed out at the last minute. I don't see this friend much so payment was going to happen in AC. Needless to say, friend backed out and I never got any money from them - everyone else on the trip got screwed because the bill was divided by 3 instead of by 4. The friend never even offered to give anything or said anything about the money..

I would give her the ticket back and let her work it out.

I agree - she should be looking to find someone to take her ticket. Unless you knew of someone right off the bat that wanted it.

i know it's done alot, but i wouldn't advise this - undercover cops are on the prowl for scalpers.
I know it's fairly commonplace, but why take the risk

I would give her the ticket and tell her she should try to sell it. Why should you really have to do that?
She can sell it on stubhub too, if she wants...although I'm sure single tickets are hard to sell.

Re: Question about a concert ticket and a friend backing out...
I would post the ticket on stub hub and craigs list at cost. Really she should post it b/c it's her responsibility to try and get her money back but if you are helping her out then you can post---if you can't find anyone to take the ticket, than yes it's hers to eat. I've had people do this to me before--it's always hard to be the organizer! Enjoy the concert!

You may need to work out a deal with her before you try that if any jail time is accurued, the bail money is coming out of her pocket!

her ticket, her problem. Its nice of you to try to find someone to take it and pay for it, but definately not your responsibility.

Yeah, I'm too scared to try anything like this anyway
Thanks for all of the advice. I've tapped into one last resource but if they don't work out, I'm just going to give her the ticket to do with what she wants.
Thanks!

Up to her to find someone to take that ticket, not you....

I agree. I know tons of people who got caught just trying to get rid of one ticket.

ITA too.
I might be wrong but I think you can sell the ticket on the street at face value or below. But it's less work and worry for you just to let her eat the cost.

I think that it is only considered scalping if you try to sell the ticket for more than the original price. I could be wrong.
My friend and I decided to get tickets for a Broadway show. I paid for the tickets using my card. She tells me a week before the show that she was going away (non emergency). She said that she could sell our tickets to two of her friends. I wasn't cool with that because I wanted to see the show. I ended up taking half of the money from her and selling her ticket to a friend for half price.

i meant sell at face value... I figure that is the place to sell the ticket to people who want to go to the concert, I would never overcharge

Re: Question about a concert ticket and a friend backing out...
This has happened to me countless times and it looks like I will have an extra ticket for the Police on wednesday b/c a friend might not be able to go.
I usually tell the person to see if they can find someone else. I'll make a call or two but I won't go crazy trying to find someone else...I feel bad they have to eat the price of the ticket but if I couldn't go I would either eat the money or try to find someone else.

If you're selling it for face value, it's not scalping. I did this for my husband with hockey tickets.
