question about Ashkenazi Jews
How do you determine if this is your heritage?
There is a sign posted at my job looking for people of Ashkenazi descent to be tested as a potential bone marrow donor for a woman with leukemia.
I have a friend who died of the same leukemia she has and it would really mean a lot to me if I could help out, or at least try to. But I don't really know if I am Ashkenazi or not. Both my grandmothers are from Russia and my paternal grandfather is from Poland. My maternal grandfather was born in the U.S.

from what I know you are probably Ashkenazi..

Ashkenazi jews are those whose ancestors descend from central and eastern Europs os it sounds like you are likely ashkenazi.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I just wanted to say that you're considering doing such a selfless and courageous thing. My aunt had a bone marrow transplant many years ago that gave her several more years. You'd be doing an amazing thing to donate.

Ashkenazi: A member of the branch of European Jews, historically Yiddish-speaking, who settled in central and northern Europe.
Sephardic: A descendent of the Jews who lived in Spain and Portugal during the Middle Ages until persecution culminating in expulsion in 1492 forced them to leave.

Thank you everyone!
I filled out all the info to become a donor. They are sending me the kit so I can swab the inside of my cheek and test me to see if I match this woman.
Even if I don't match her, I'll be on the registry and might be able to help someone else.
