Question about dilation/effacement

Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking...
I had my first internal last night at 36w4d and was told the baby has completely dropped, I am at least 1cm dilated and 90% (minimally - if not fully) effaced.
Can anyone who got a similar report share how soon after they had their baby? Just wondering if this means nothing and I won't go til early April, or is that progess and looking like an early delivery?

TIA!

I got that report at my first internal at 37 weeks and kept getting the same report week after week. My DS was 10 days late. Hopefully things will move along more quickly for you!

Geez - if fully effaced and 5cm dilated isn't considered "in labor" what is?

well, not to speak for hbugal but we both have had other children.. i was 7 cm for a week and a half before i delivered Spencer! The more pregnancies you have the more irritable your cervix is causing more and more premature contractions that actually dilate you. i would say if this is your first baby you have some time! but it s a good sign that things are moving along!Chat Icon

Re: Question about dilation/effacement

I was dilated I think 1 cm at my 36 week appt and the doctor could feel the babies head. I ended up having him two days late but it was a quick labor.

She (Hanauer) seemed to think more of the effacement as a good sign then the 1cm dilated. So maybe there's something to being fully effaced as opposed to partially and a few cms.
Ok, now I'm making up theories Chat Icon

my doctor kept telling me you are ready and probably have this baby before due date... well my water broke 1 day late... the baby will come when he/she is ready Chat Icon

36 weeks: fingertip and 50%.

37 weeks: 1-2cm and 70%

38 weeks: 3cm and 90%

39 weeks: 3cm and 90%

basically i was 3cm and 90% effaced for a week and a half. went into labor at 39 weeks, 4 days.

good luck!!!!

I was 3-4 cm dilated and 90% effaced for at least a week(maybe more because we arent sure how long before that I had those numbers.) But I was 2 weeks early.
