Question about driving on the Mass Pike?

Is there any other way to get there other than I95? We are going to Boston for the weekend and think the pike is the best way of "avoiding traffic"

Anyone have a clue?

Ugh, I HATE the Mass Pike. My suggestion would be to go kind of the roundabout way. I'd take the Orient Point Ferry to New London Conn. That leaves you just a quick drive to Rhode Island on 95. And honestly, it's quick from there, there's a way you can go south through Rhode Island and come back up on Rt24 in Mass. to get to Boston. It's a little out of hte way, but more scenic, no tolls and hardly any traffic at all.

Personally, I don't like it. The drive is beyond boring because you're just looking at rocks the whole way, then you hit tolls as you get closer to Boston. You're constantly paying a stupid toll. How far west do you have to go to drop the dog off? It would almost be worth it to do that a day early and then head east. I mean, I used to make the drive to and from Boston every weekend for 3 years, and I just hate the Mass Pike. But considering it's a one-time deal for you, I'm sure it'd be fineChat Icon

Re: Question about driving on the Mass Pike?

are you saying you need a better way to get to I-90 without having to take I-95?

absolutely. take route 91 North - it is around exit 44 off of 95. you'll drive on that for approx. 15 miles, at which point you should get onto route 84 East. after 45 miles, you will drop off at I-90.

another way to exit 95 even earlier would be to get off in Stamford (exit 7). go North and take this all the way up to the Merritt parkway (route 15). take the merritt north until you hit 91, and then follow same directions above.

eta: i would NOT recommend taking the ferry. imo it is more expensive and more time-consuming. if you time it right, the drive will take you only 3.5 hours

Do you think it would be better to get on the mass pike sooner or later? According to mapquest they have the directions as you have like you have 91N and then 84E to 90.

Could not agree more! We NEVER drive on I-95 going to Maine. We do the exact as posted about but we LOVE the Merritt to I-91. Less congestion & no trucks until I-91!

This is how we always go - 91 & 84 to 90.

I like the ferry even tho it is more $$, just because it is relaxing - but from NHP doesn't make sense.

Also 3.5 hours is a stretch on Friday, holiday weekend!! I would figure 5 hours to be safe.

Agree with this. I used to drive to Hartford a lot, when I lived there. Then drove to Boston for work from Hartford. Love the Merritt. This route is great. I hate the 95.
