Question about Fondant frosting
So, I was married way before these fancy wedding cakes were made with fondant. Is the fondant edible? If so, what does it taste like?
Thanks!
I want to get my DH a cake in the shape of a football jersey and the bakery says that they only do fondant for "those types of cakes"
TIA...
BTW, this is a very hard service to find in NYC that doesn't cost 300+++

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
It is edible, just very sweet because it is sugar based.

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
I prefer regular icing. While awesome cakes are made and covered with fondant, I personally don't like the taste or texture of fondant.

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
Yes, fondant is edible. Some people don't like the way it tastes--I do--it is very sweet & a little chewey ( it doesn't smear like most frostings) Some people prefer it if they put butter cream underneath it.
Most cakes that look like non cake things are covered in it.

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
It is chewy, very sugary... it depends on the place because some fondant is better than others. a baker told me the difference is in how thick they make the fondant. if they do a thin fondant with a buttercream icing underneath it (a layer of buttercream will make the flavor better) then it will taste nice. maybe ask if they can do that. for our wedding cake the baker made the fondant very thin (more for looks) and then put a nice layer of buttercream under and filled it with chocolate pudding and devil's food. it was great! HTH!

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
I just got two fondant cakes from BCakeNY. I didn't eat the fondant part--it's to sugary for me, but it is edible. You should check out Bcakeny.com . I'm sure she would do a cake for you for way less than $300. I took down my pics, but you can check out what she does on her site.
ETA: Tell her Erin referred you.

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
Fondant looks gorgeous -- but doesn't always taste very good. I've had very few fondant cakes that had tasty fondant icing. (The cake on the inside was delicious, just not the icing.)
Audrey's in Sayville makes yummy fondant iced cakes.

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
It's edible, but it usually doesn't taste very good. I much prefer buttercream.

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
ask how they make their fondant. Some fondant is a marshmallow base and it's very good, other fondant is edible but might not taste that way. Most places will peel off the fondant before serving the cake because they know people won't eat the fondant.

Re: Question about Fondant frosting
Fondant is like chewing gum to me. I thought it was good. But i'd take buttercream over it any day!!

What she said. Our wedding cake fondant tasted like marshmallow and was very good.
