Question about garage door openers

I know we're supposed to change the locks when we move in, but what about automatic garage door openers? Is there a way to re-program them? Is this something you did when you moved?

Re: Question about garage door openers

I think the only thing that can be reprogrammed is the password to open the doors up and down manually.

With the remotes there no way to make it private.

I find it funny cause my father had a new garage opener installed and when he went to use it, the signal also made my neighbor's TV turn off or change channels. They had to have the co. come and reprogram the signal, so that stopped happening!

When my parents moved into thier new house I think my mom looked in the manual and changed the code ASAP. I would check the manual if not give the manufacturer a call to ask them but I think you can change the code.

Re: Question about garage door openers

Yes, they can be reprogrammed for sure. See what brand name it is and look it up online for a online manual or see if they left you a manual .

Garage door openers can usually be reprogrammed in case your neighbor had the same one as you, kwim?

Re: Question about garage door openers

Our opener is very old. Very, very, very old. We aren't really that concerned about someone breaking in because the garage is not attached to the house. Oddly, every now and then we wake up to find that the garage door is open. This started happening after we literally saw the door open on its own once during a thunder storm. Very strange.

Re: Question about garage door openers

We didn't get a garage door opener when we closed b/c the bank didn't have one from the previous owner.

We went down to home depot and got a universal opener and programmed it... it was really simple.
