Question about grabbing objects?
Julia is almost 3 months and hasn't really started to grab and hold objects yet. She just stares and admires them and will swing at it but not grab.
If we put objects in her hand - she might hold on for a minute and then lets go (sometimes not even that long).
How what age did your child really make the distinction and start grabbing objects?

Re: Question about grabbing objects?
DD is starting to do this now (3 months) but she isn't doing other things that people said she should be doing like laughing. I wouldn't worry. I used to teach special ed and now teach kindergarten ( I know a lot about developmental milestones) and I wouldn't worry about this one. If you are conserned I would just keep things that she is interested in at arm's reach for her to become excited about and try to grab. There are much worse things to worry about than this( not to say you have/should worry). They all progress in their own time frame.
ETA: My mom told me I started to do this after I was 5 months and here I am now with more education than a master's degree and always on deen's list or in honor society.... so go figre.....!!!!!!!

Re: Question about grabbing objects?
My son started at 4 mos. But every baby is different and does things at his/her own pace. My son will be 6 mos old on Monday and about 2 weeks ago he started rolling over (both ways). Some babies roll over at 4 mos. My ped told me not to worry and that he was fine and he would do it when he is ready. And he did. So try not to worry
ETA: You also have to take into consideration that when babies first start grabbing objects their aim isn't so great. It takes a little while for them to "aim" well and be able to grab the object they want. By what you're saying it seems like your daughter is trying to grab by swinging but that her aim is not perfected yet and that's totally normal.

Re: Question about grabbing objects?
My son is 4 months and he still doesn't reach out to grab things. He grabs anything that is put into or touches his hands though... like my hair! ouch!

Re: Question about grabbing objects?
I would say that Emily started to do it around 4 months but before then I would just put things in her hands a lot. Then one day she just started doing it on her own and also started transfering things from one hand to another at the same time. I would say to just continue putting things into your baby's hands and especially things with all different textures.

I remember it was right around Mother's Day last year when he started grabbing and holding objects. So almost 3.5 months.

Re: Question about grabbing objects?
OMG, I remember distinctly the day Alex started swatting and grabbing at objects! It was two weeks into daycare so she was about 3 months. She started slowly but gained strength and coordination every week. Don't worry at all... 3 months is just about the time they start experimenting. Your baby has plenty of time to start holding and dropping objects, and then YOU become the monkey!
