Question about Prune juice for constipation

My DS is one month old today, he is only having one bowel movement sometimes every day. He is still quite gassy though. Can I give him prune juice to help? Or is that a bad idea. How much can I give him if it ok.

AT that age I would probably call the ped and ask.

I know that when DD was younger they recommeded pear juice for constipation. Also you could try the thermometer trick or bicycling her legs.

Re: Question about Prune juice for constipation

If he is going everyday, then no, I wouldn't give it to him. My ped told me that constipation would be if they didn't go for a few days. if he is gassy, I would try and keep him upright during his feedings and then keeping him up for a little while after he was done to let it settle in his tummy. You can also try massaging his back to get those burps up.

Good Luck!

Re: Question about Prune juice for constipation

He's probably not constipated so I wouldn't use a remedy for that. It isn't unusual for babies to go days without a bowel movement. If he is truly constipated, he will have hard stools and have a lot of trouble pushing and it will cause pain.

Have you tried using a therometer to help things along?

As for your other question, no, I would not give a 1 month old prune juice unless directed by the ped.

Re: Question about Prune juice for constipation

I wouldn't give him prune juice unless he didn't go for 4 days or more. For him, once a day might be regular. Unfortunately for the gas, I'd just say do everything in your power to get it out. I used to bounce DD on my knee with her back and head supported. You can also lay DH across your legs, bounce knees a little and pat his back.

Re: Question about Prune juice for constipation

Thank you. We have been rubbing his stomach and back, bicycling the legs and have used the themometer to help with the gas he does have a hard time getting it out most of the time. It is unbelievable how much gas his little stomach holds, and sometimes it is painful for him. I can't wait for this time to be over so he'll start feeling better. His stool is not formed but a kacky olive green and seedy. Is that from the formula (Good Start)?

Re: Question about Prune juice for constipation

It sounds normal for a month old baby. Their little bodies/bellies take a bit to get adjusted to the formula. He will be ripping a$$ like a champ before you know it.

Good luck!
