Question about resumes

okay, as you all know I have been out of the workforce almost a year but I'm looking for jobs now.
So far my resume says that I worked until may but of course that's not true.
Should I just put that I worked until july 2004 and if I get called on interviews explain about the gap? What should I do?

Re: Question about resumes

don't lie about the date. Maybe leave off the month altogether and just put a year

It's easy for companies to check the dates of employment

Well I stopped working on july 23, 2004 because I went on maternity leave but never went back to my old job so it's been a year since I stopped working.

Re: Question about resumes

I would just leave it out, and then they can ask you about it during the interview.
Someone who applied to my company recently lied about something small on their resume, and the truth came out during their background check. They were fired before their first dayChat Icon

Re: Question about resumes

I don't have any months on my resume, not because of gaps in working, just because I don't like the way it looks. i don't think it is that uncommon to leave the months off, and they will probably ask you during the interview why you left your last job or what you have been doing since last year.

Re: Question about resumes

Definitely tell the truth. I was laid off in Jan when I was 5 mo pg and have just started my job search. On my resume I just put the end date of Jan 2005 for my last job. Someone called me today about a job and when they asked about the gap I just told them that I decided not to work until after I had the baby.

Re: Question about resumes

Just be honest with them if they ask about the gap.

Re: Question about resumes

I just put the years and not the months. I wouldn't put anything on your resume about maternity leave- when they ask you just tell them. I have a few gaps on my resume and just said I've been a sahmChat Icon

Now I'm wondering... I have left out a job on my resume that I only worked for less than 2 months (did not like it and quit). Do I really need to put that down? I really don't know who or if I'd want to give them a reference from there?Chat Icon

Re: Question about resumes

One of my professors just told us never to have a gap on a resume--if maternity leave, whatever, he said to put July 2004-July 2005 Family responsibilities.

I wouldn't worry about the gap in your resume too much. Lots of people have gaps from being on leave, being downsized, and so forth. I agree with the advice above about putting just years (or years and seasons, like "Fall 1995-Winter 2004") in your resume job descriptions.

Good luck! Chat Icon

I'm looking for part time work but I have been looking mainly in retail because that's where most of experience lies on. I went on two interviews already, so I'm just waiting to hear anything.Chat Icon Chat Icon
