question about rings

so lets say a guy wants to propose to his girlfriend but he doesnt believe in spending so much money on a diamond and wants to give her a cubic zirconia ring or a gemstone ring

how would you feel?

Imo its really not about the ring but the symbol behind it

Re: question about rings

oh wait, I change my answer. I thought he couldnt afford a diamond.

If she is ok with it, then thats cool. But, I would hope she feels the same way.

Re: question about rings

what is his reason for not "believing in it"? I am all for the symbolism behind it and if I lost my rings tomorrow but still had my DH that would be all that mattered, but still, I feel like when a guy (or a girl, whoever) makes the effort to work hard and save up and present the girl with the ring...I dunno..there's just something about it.

My friend has a saphire because her husband read about the cruelty of the diamond industry back in college. I guess like the film Blood diamonds. My friend is OK with it.

Re: question about rings

To me, the e-ring shouldn’t be about the dollar amount that is spent, but on buying a ring that she will love forever.

It should be what he can save up for and feel good giving her.

I wouldn't have cared if DH had gotten me a CZ. I had actually asked for one because I never wear jewelry and was scared I would lose it. So, he bought me a diamond... and insurance Chat Icon

Re: question about rings

Even if Kevin had proposed to me with one of these, I still would've said Yes.

If it were me, I'd prefer a different kind of ring over a CZ. You don't have to get a diamond, or a diamond look alike, just b/c most other people have one.

We almost skipped the whole ring the thing altogether.

If the bride wanted a diamond, though, and they could afford it, she shouldn't have to go without, just because he "doesn't believe in it."

Or at least she should get a sparkly wedding band!

Re: question about rings

well he is a very frugal and simple person as it is, he feels that diamonds are overpriced but overall he cant spend a lot, but still wants to make her girlfriend happy, they are friends of mine and she is okay with being a cubic zirconia but she would rather get a gemstone ring.

If it were one or the other, I'd rather have a gemstone than a cubic zirconia too. A cubic zirconia is an imitation diamond to me - not quite the real thing - whereas a gemstone can be beautiful by itself without being compared to something more valuable. JMO!

Re: question about rings

I think it is the couple's choice. If she is happy with it, go for it.

Re: question about rings

I actually wish I got a sapphire as opposed to a diamond ering. It is just more different. I don't know if sapphires are any less expensive.

I'd rather go without an ering than have a CZ. I don't know, if she's on board, then great, but if it's something she wants and he has the money, I think she should get what she wants (within reason). The ering is for the rest of your life, so I don't think he should pull the frugal card unless he doesn't have the means to pay for it.

I don't think anyone should go into debt to pay for an ering.

Re: question about rings

Honestly, I told DH that I didn't need a ring, I just wanted to be his wife. It's not the ring that defines the marriage. But at the same time, I think it's one thing if he can't afford a ring but another thing if he's just being cheap. If he won't eat for 3 months, I understand. But if he won't be putting into his 401K for 3 months, then I think it's kind of a jip to the girl. Yes, it's a symbol, it's just a ring, but damn, this is NOT the time in one's life to be cheap. ITA! It should really be what the woman wants. I mean it happens once (hopefully) and she'll wear it every day forever. It should be something she wants to wear every day.

I have a couple friends who preferred gemstones over diamonds. If the girl is okay with it, I see nothing wrong with it.

Re: question about rings

I don't find anything wrong with it. My dh and I had no money when we got engaged and I love my ring. No, it is not 2 carats but who cares. We have surpassed many couples and we are celebrating our 15th anniversary next month!

Re: question about rings

It's her ring get her what she wants, but I do understand the hesitation. When Joe proposed I asked for a cz ring just because I was still on the road and I was afraid I would lose the diamond on a call, and then I wanted a sapphire ring and in the end changed my mind..again.......I WISH I had stayed with the sapphire because in my heart I will always wish I had a sapphire e-ring

Re: question about rings

I told DH to just get a cz and we would upgrade when we could afford it. Who would know and if they did, who cares. It's the thought that counts.

actually, my DH kind of did propose with a ring pop! he had the real ring but it had always been a joke that he'd do it with the candy and i'd get my choice of flavors. and so when he actually popped the q, he had a strawberry one ready. Chat Icon

in all seriousness, it shouldn't matter what the guy is proposing with. it's the love behind it. it would be a totally different thing though if he lied about it and said it was real when it was not... honesty is everything!
