Question about running down hill....
I keep hearing how jarring it is for the knees to run downhill.....
Am I the only one who will only walk downhill unless I'm racing?
I run up the hills, but I feel, will it REALLY affect my training in any significant way if I don't run down those hills?

Re: Question about running down hill....
running down hills are good for the quads. I personally love the gift of gravity and have always used the downhills, but I can imagine being nervous about knees. How is your form? Are your abs and glutes working when going down to stabilize you? I also put my arms out to stabilize myself.
Are you burning up too much energy going up hill?
If doing hill repeats, I slowly jog down the hill to catch my breath.

Re: Question about running down hill....
Running downhill hurts my knees so much. I remember during my last race I was going (slowly!) down a hill & saying "ouch ouch ouch" the whole time! Walking down steep hills actually hurts my knees too. In training I walk down very steep hills, but run slowly down the rest.

I have the same experiences word for word.
I definitely prefer downhill. There is one race by me that has a like a 2 mile downhill - the next day my quads always kill me.

I hear you - I think we are the same age and since DH had the trifecta of knee surgeries...I have been nervous about my knees. I don't like to do lunges or squats too much b/c of them.

When i ran Mohawk-Hudson (400 foot net drop - not too much)...my quads were on fire by mile 16! I didn't like the downhill then!! LOL
I think it is why I like Cow Harbor so much,. With the exception of mile 2, it has great declines.

Re: Question about running down hill....
Going downhill is just as challenging as going uphill.
Keep your form good. Always follow what your body tells you. Yes, you will have to go faster. sometimes people "put the brakes on" when running downhill, which is killer for our legs. Running always should come from the trunk.
So, I say as long as you keep your natural form, you should be ok going downhill.
