Question about SA for my husband
I am so annoyed right now. . . so maybe somebody can help me understand. . .I just finished my 4th cycle of clomid. At my last ob/gyn appt. my doctor asked one of the girls in the office to give me a form for quest diag. to have a semen analysis done. They said I could bring it to any quest as long as it is with in the hour.
So last Sat. I bring the sample and form to quest and a nasty receptionist there told me that the doctor's office never filled out the form for what needed to be done. I didn't know the form wasn't filled out. It had a code on it and some other things written in but that was only the code for the diagnosis. So I left there crying and aggravated.
We have been trying for 7 months now. I have pcos and severe endometriosis and my hormones are going crazy!!
OK. . .so finally Monday rolls around and I call my doctor's office to complain about the form that was never filled out correctly and another issue, . . .the Fri. prior, one of the girls from the office called to give me my Beta results. Instead of the girl saying your results are positive or negative she instead said. . ."you're not pregnant" I said ok thank you and she followed up with, "Is that a good thing?" Maybe if I was not married and in my teens that would be a bad thing. I didn't say that but it hurt my feelings. I said to her, no it's not a good thing but after 7 months of hearing the same thing you kind of get use to it. Hello. . .she should have read my chart!! I love my doctor but his staff needs help. I have been going there for 12 years and I have seen such a big turn over of staff. After I spoke to the office manager and told her the situation she apologized and told me to write on the bottom of the form semen analysis.
The only chance I had to bring the sample in was this morning. I had to go to CVS last night to buy a sterile cup for $5. That wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't going to waste. I get up this morning my husband gives me the sample and I rush to a different Quest office. When I get there the lady tells me that they can only accept samples from men that are post vasectomy. I needed to bring the sample to their home care office in Sysosset and my husband needs a full check up. Once again I had to leave with the wasted sample. I live all the way out east on the island and there was no way I could make it to Syosset w/in the hour.
UGH!! Once again the tears start and I am completely frustrated. Did you ever hear of this? Why didn't my doctor tell me this. I wasted 2 samples now and time. I needed the results b/c Wed. is my first appt. at East Coast Fertility with Dr. Kreiner. They just want to wean out the possibility that it could also be my husband. I feel like this is never going to happen. It is never smooth and goes the way I want. My husband can't come with me to my first appt. b/c he has to work and can't get off. Our schedules are opposite so it makes it even harder. Sorry for the very long rant. Hopefully somebody can help me!! Thank you!!

Re: Question about SA for my husband
That is ridiculous. My husband just got the perscription from the dr and called the Andrology lab at Stony Brook. They gave him an appointment and there were no problems.

Re: Question about SA for my husband
Given your issues and the difficulties you described with the doctor's office, I think you need to start seeing a RE ASAP! There is no need for you to be going through this. The fact that you have been on clomid for 4 months without having a SA done is also a problem. That SA should have been done before you even started clomid. Please go to a RE, you will have a much better experience. Best of luck!

Re: Question about SA for my husband
Aww.... I'm sorry you are having such a rough time...my husband's SA went right to the RE's office - the andrology lab is right there. Maybe you should just wait for your RE appointment - they are probably much better at handling these kinds of things and will hopefully make it easy for you...

Re: Question about SA for my husband
I'm sorry that happened to you. You are much better off going to see an RE. You will be much happier with them handling your treatment. They will be much more sensitive to your situation then a regular ob/gyn office would be.

Re: Question about SA for my husband
Like others said, as I am reading this, I think you would be much better of at an RE, but I see at the end of your post you have an appointment this week. You will be able to get the SA done with the REs office and it won't be such a hassle as it has been for you once you go there. We did our SA with our REs office. Good luck with your appointment.

My DH did the same thing. Where out east do you live? I'm out on the North fork. Hang in there, this whole process is so frustrating and dopey people don't seem to help. I'm sorry you had to go thru all of this!!

Re: Question about SA for my husband
I'm out on the east end too and my DH works mostly in East Hampton and our RE is in NYC or Garden City (depending on day). So, I totally understand your frustrations with timing and travel. Vent it out. That is what we are here for.
I agree with everyone that we are glad you are going to see an RE this week. DH cannot come with you to the appointment but maybe you can find another lab this week. Call ahead and let them know what you are doing. I think as long as the lab is within an hour you should be fine. (TMI) I used to put it in my bra to carry to the lab so my body heat would keep it fresh.
I know you want to super rush this but I've learned you can't. But, you have a direction and that is getting you to your goal.
Good luck with your appointment.

Re: Question about SA for my husband
For SA my husband had three done by three different doctors. First we went to Quest and got the results, then off to a urologist. The urologist didn't think the SA was done correctly by Quest so we had it done at Stony Brook Hospital for the urologist. We brought the sperm to the Quest office located off of Vets highway from the Expressway, by Hooters. When we went we brought the script and dropped it off within one hour. Then... we had our appointment at East Coast they wanted the SA done by them so they had Kreuger scale results done for the morphology of the sperm. And now we are at East Coast with Dr. Z with results that everyone is content with. So I would skip Quest and have East Coast just do one there with their lab.

ITA with this. I would actually prefer to have the SA run through your new RE. We were very surprised when we moved to the RE and they had DH do another SA regardless of the fact that the one he had 6 months earlier said it was normal especially since the two he had with the RE showed we were also dealing with MF. Our RE explained to us that the labs (Quest, LabCorp, etc...) use a different scale to analyze the results of the SA. The REs use a different, and stricter scale to analyze the SA.

Re: Question about SA for my husband
I have to wonder why your DH wasn't sent for a SA before you started the Clomid...
In any event, what you are going through is absolutely ridiculous, and I think you need to talk to your Dr. about the way you have been treated by his/her staff, and by the lab. You shouldn't have to go through all of this.
I know when my DH had his SA done, he was sent to my RE's office, he produced the sample there, and they ran it for him there.
Good luck with everything!!!!!

Re: Question about SA for my husband
Thank you all for your responses. I just want to fill you in on a little background of why my DH hasn't had a SA done prior. I think this would help with the questions of why the doctor waited. . .Last year I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis. After my surgery my doctor told my mother that I can't afford to wait to start ttc. I have fibroid cysts in my uterus as well as pcos (man I am falling apart ). My sister had a hysterectomy at the age of 32 thankfully after she had 3 healthy boys. My 2 other sisters have children but also have bad fibroids so it runs in my my family. I was devastated considering that this was last May and I wasn't due to get married until March of 08. I really didn't want to be preg. at my wedding (didn't think it would take me this long to get preg.) Anyway, after talking to my Fh at the time we decided to call our hall and all vendors to see if there were any earlier dates available. With luck everybody was available. So we moved the wedding up 6 months. We finally began somewhat trying in August and then by Oct. we were really trying. My doctor began me on Metformin in Sept. and I finally began to ovulate. Then I began my first cycle of clomid at 50mg in Jan. and when I went for my 10 day sono. I had 8 follicles. On my day 12 sono. I had 4 eggs that were at 23mm so he gave me the shot of ovidrel and we did what we were told. My reg. ob/gyn happens to be a specialist in infertility. So he did monitor me with blood tests and sono. He wanted to have me do the clomid 2 cycles b4 sending my husband.
He had in my file that he recommended a SA be done but the dimwits in his office failed to give me the forms after he told them. So when I went in last time he asked me why my husband hasn't been tested yet. I explained that nobody told me and he said something to one of the girl that he told last time. I know my doctor should be more aware of his staffs lack of communication with his patients but he is a great doctor.
When I called East Coast and I mentioned my doctor they said I have been in good hands b/c he is a specialist when dealing with PCOS and endometriosis. It is just annoying that the girls there don't know what they are doing. I have to go tomorrow to pick up copies of my past pap results and anything that would be helpful for the doctor's at ECF. My husband is going to come with me b/c he is so annoyed now. He is much better at confronting people than I am.
So I am going to call ECF tomorrow to see if I can bring DH sample with me to my appt. on Wed. My appt. is right b4 he leaves for work so I think we can work something out. Thank you all for helping me. Hopefully this clarifies why we waited on the SA.

Re: Question about SA for my husband
Ahhhhh ok...so it sounds like someone in the office dropped the ball. I just went through the whole Clomid/Ovidrel thing myself, and one thing my Dr. made sure to do was to send DH for the SA and to send me for all sorts of tests to rule out problems other than PCOS. I just wasn't sure why they would have had you wait on the SA.
In any event, I hope everything works out and that you get your BFP soon!!!!

We did the same thing.
And I will reiterate what everyone has said, it would be best to see an RE. They will be much more comapssionate to your situation and help you to get pregnant without all the drama you get with an OB office. Good luck
