question about selling gold (re: fake gold)
We just moved my great aunt into a senior home and in clearing out her house, rounded up all of her jewelry. So much of it is costume jewelry, but with alot of real gold mixed in. I told her i'd go sell it for her, but neither one of us can really tell the difference.
So my question is- will i look like a complete idiot if i just go there with all of it and ask them to sort out the real from the fake and then sell the real?

No, they will test it out for you. You wont look like an idiot. My sister had a gold party and people were surprised about the fake pieces they had. But no one looked silly, go for it.

I agree with above poster. They test it. Either way, they usually don't buy it from you without testing it. A good place is a place that tests it in front of you. That way you can see what comes up real and what doesn't.
They use this metal/magnetic looking board. The take the gold and scratch a few lines on the board. Then they pour acid over it. Depending on if the line disappears or not, is if its real or not. They usually try for 14K gold first. if the line disappears, but not all the way, they try with a different acid, looking for 10k gold. And so on. if it disappears right away, its not real.
Then you can separate the real pieces from the fake, and price out that stuff.

No... I brought them stuff and they told me what was fake and just gave it back to me. Didn't make me feel like an idiot at all...

they will just scratch it against a substance and be able to tell right away. you wont/shouldnt feel stupid!
