Question about staining over stained wood

Is this possible? We have a bit of wood in our family room. I don't think it's been touched for 16+ years...it's quite orange. I don't want to paint it, since we will be listing our house and I don't want to take any options away for the buyers. Can I just rub a slightly darker stain over to freshen it up and make it not so orange?

I am not 100% sure but I think you would have to strip/sand it and then re-stain it with a darker stain.

You will need to sand it down because there is most likely a coat of poly on it and the stain wont penetrate through it.

Re: Question about staining over stained wood

I would sand then stain darker.

To be honest - I think white painted moldings appeal to more buyers than wood...

I myself prefer wood (DH doesn't, hence our white molding'd home), but I think most people prefer the clean look of white.

I'd normally agree but it looks like her ceiling is wood too. You'll need to sand it first before restaining it.

I prefer wood, it's maintenance free and won't need painting ever again

I would leave it as-is
