Question about staying in the hospital...
Can people staying in a hospital use their cell phones instead of renting the phone for their personal use? My mom is having surgery on Friday and will be in for a while, and I thought she could just bring her cell but I don't know if it interferes with machines.

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
Depends on where in the hospital she is. I know that last week when I was in the hospital I didn't have to rent the phone it was just hooked up. However, I was unable to make long distance calls.

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
Depends on the hospital, when I had Ava, I was in St. Catherines and yes, I could use my cell. It was great!

Great! It's Stony Brook, but I will have her bring it just in case. Much easier and cheaper I am sure.

I know that just under a year ago, in the maternity ward at Stony Brook, we were not allowed to use cell phones there. HTH

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
I think most of the phones have incoming, and the number is posted on the phone. Or is it mainly outgoing you were interested in?

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
My father had been in and out of various units of NSUH for 9 months. Some units were very strict and some were not. I actually remember a guard coming into the ICU waiting room telling people he knew someone was on the phone and they needed to turn it off.

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
I would say the majority of the hospitals will not allow cell phones anywhere. They can interfere with the telemetry machines (heart monitors) as well as other equipment. The hospital I worked in didn't charge for phone, only TV. (i think!)

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
This is a good question! I am going in the hospital Feb.7th and never even thought about bringing my cell phone. They said no personal items so I never thought about bringing my cell phone.

Thanks, that does help. I guess she'll just bring it and see. She calls my grandma every day because she's almost 90 so she just wanted to see what her options are.
ETA: I *think* she will just be in a regular unit. If the surgery goes as planned she will be in several days, but hopefully will not need ICU.

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
I work in a hospital and I always keep my cell phone on me and use it, except for ICU and CCU units... Also in certain parts of the ER, but in regular units it's fine

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
I just checked the website for Southampton Hospital where I will be next Friday

Make sure to check how much you are billed for the phone. I work for verizon and I see lots of hospital phones billed to peoples phone bills and sometimes they charge a lot of money!

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
When DW was at StonyBrook after giving birth, I couldn't use the cell in the room. There were signs everywhere. They were allowed near the elevators, and the "bridge" between the towers. Of course, that doesn't help with incoming calls, but luckily, I just needed it for outgoing calls to let everyone know about the babies... DW used the phone in the room for incoming and outgoing. Don't remember if there was a cost involved.

Re: Question about staying in the hospital...
I delivered at Winthrop and I used my cell in my room and the nurse never said anything to me but I still requested the phone to be turned on because I didnt like using my cell phone. I think for the tb and phone it was only $20.
