Question about throwing stuff out of house
We are going to be getting rid of some furniture and junk out of my dad's house and DH is convinced we need a container. I don't think we have that much to throw out and that the garbage men for Town of Hempstead practically take everything, and if not I think my sister knows the # to call for special pickups. But as for old furniture - we have an old sofa - old in years (15 or 20 yrs old) but still in good condition - would Salvation Army still take it if it's old? My dad put a piece of plywood in between the cushions and springs when he bought it so it wouldn't sag so in that way it's not sagging at all. The dining room furniture is probably 45 years old and very outdated and not sure if Salvation Army would take it. Do they take stuff thta is very old or should we just junk it? And if we just junk it (it's just 4 chairs and a small table and 2 inserts) do we need a container or would the garbage men take it? Theres a ton of plywood too in the basement - again would the garbage men take that?
This would be in Oceanside so it's Town of Hempstead garbage pickup. Thanks!

Re: Question about throwing stuff out of house
I would take quick pictures & put the furniture on craigslist-free section. There are always people in need of clean good furniture. I've given tons of stuff away through craigs or freecycle. Its so much better than it ending up in our landfills. St vincent dePaul takes furniture too.

I would add that you could probably SELL it on craigslist. List it for a very reasonable price and you would be surprised.

Def. put it on Craigslist. My dad and I sold all my grandma's furniture (it was old but in decent condition) for about $800 to one person who wanted to furnish an apartment. It was great.

Re: Question about throwing stuff out of house
My mom tried to have Salvation Army take a couch that was in very good condition and they wouldn't take it because there was a teeny tiny stain in a part that wasn't even visible. They are crazy selective about what they'll take nowadays.
We're in Oceanside too and we just call for a special pickup when we put out furniture. They take pretty much everything (if it's not taken by someone before then). If not, do you know about the dump in Merrick? You can just bring big things there.
