Question... designer/name brands
Now don't get defensive... I'm just asking...
I noticed on Lolita's What's in your purse thread... there are some people who always seem to feel compelled to preface the description of a possession by the designer's name...
Why is that?
I mean...I wrote my reply then I looked back at some of the others... and some people were like me - lipstick, wallet, etc.
Others were like "XXXX" lipstick, or "XXXX" wallet.
I never feel a need to do that...just curious why others do?
If it's just because you want others to know that you own designer stuff - just say it - if it's the truth, there's no shame in that!

Re: Question... designer/name brands
Some people just do that. I am a sucker for those things, so I call them by their names. I want my diet COKE, I want my BURBERRY Jacket, I want my KLEENEX, you know what I mean.
The other half could be bc some people are proud of those things they worked hard to get.

Re: Question... designer/name brands
I totally know what you mean..I was thinking the same thing!
One really annoying example of that. Right after my grandmother's funeral, as people were leaving the cemetary, my mom's cousin was freaking out b/c she couldn't find her "Lexus keys." I don't call my car keys my "Honda keys!" Nevermind the fact that she was trying to get my sister to help her find them, and it was our grandmother's FUNERAL!

Re: Question... designer/name brands
I'm confused...is it that it's DESIGNER or that it's a name-brand (being specific)?
I personally would have responded by stating:
Maybelline Mascara Chanel Lipgloss leather wallet blackberry
to me - there's no difference, except that I'm being more descriptinve w/the items. I just think people are sometimes more descriptive about products....
or is it that they specifically go out of their way to state that they have a "designer" namebrand?
I'm sure there are people who do it dileberately to make other jealous. I'm sure there are people who do it b/c it's just to give more descriptive details.

Re: Question... designer/name brands
If I use a name brand it is usually followed by...
"Bought it at Filene's basement for $19.99"

I see what you are saying but if you were to say
Red lipstick leather wallet (like you wrote) black mascara
I find that to be more descriptive yes... but I don't think "Chanel" is an adjective... KWIM?

Re: Question... designer/name brands
I belong to a lot of fashion oriented message boards and it's just something we do. (The "what's in your purse" question comes up quite often.)
In my mind, it's just a description...no more, no less.
ETA: I would have prefaced my tissues with a brand, but they're no-frills (which I hate...Kleenex is so much softer. )

Re: Question... designer/name brands
it all depends on the person, some people like to flaunt their designer things, while others are just trying to be descriptive

I agree- to me it's a description- i didn't answer on the other post- but I don't see the big deal if someone wrote Mac Lip Gloss instead of just lip gloss- it paints a better mental picture

I didn't read that thread, but I think I may have givenbarnds to my lipsticks, becaues there are usual 3-5 in my bag a one time.
Pink Almay lipstick Pink Nars lipstick Nude Nars lipstick
I also took a writing class where the teacher would never say smething like " She smoked a cigarette outside the diner"
It would have to be: "She smoked a Marlboro light outside the dirty Fountain diner".
So stuff like that is just in my head.
I would also tell you though, about my CVS ibubrophin along with my Nars lipstick.

i thought it was funny when i was reading it, too
I did notice you said chapstick, Neen, not lip blam (actually I went back to look, just to tease you )
I think mentioning the cosmetic name brands has more to do with brand loyalty - like the sentiment is "I only use MAC lip gloss because it's awesome."

Re: Question... designer/name brands
I enjoy name-droppers... It's kind of nice to see that real people that I converse with on a daily basis are enjoying things that are directly connected to celebrity life-style... but GODAMIT! I love my Blistex chapstick!!

I see what you are saying... I suppose in some cases it is more descriptive...
Like if I were to say my wallet was an LV Monogram wallet - you would know exactly what it looks like.
The "descriptive" theory applies...if the person is consistent...
BUT if you have
lipstick LV Wallet mascara lipliner Lexus keys ()
Then...it's obvious that the person is not just descriptive by nature....

Re: Question... designer/name brands
I can't really say I gave it much thought I just wrote what I was thinking, like my MAC compact or my Chanel lipgloss. Personally my wallet is the most expensive thing in my bag, but its just plain black, so I didn't feel the need to be more descriptive of it.

Re: Question... designer/name brands
I actually scan over the lists that just read:
lipstick wallet eyeliner
BLAH. It means nothing to me. Almost everybody here has the same "basic" items in their purse.
Now, if it read:
Revlon Colorstay Lipstick Black leather wallet from Target Wet & Wild black eyeliner
It would be interesting to me.

I totally agree! But people don't do that. They only become "descriptive" when it's a more expensive designer/label/name brand.

Re: Question... designer/name brands
Now I'm compelled to be more descriptive! I don't want to be boring... here's my list... revised.
Black & White Vera Bradley wallet Smith's Rosebud Salve Book "Over Her Dead Body" by Kate White Excedrin Migrain I-pod Nano in a pink leather case
I feel better!

I didn't really see many designer names being thrown around in that thread. Maybe a handful or so and most related to makeup, hardly what anybody would consider worthy of bragging about or would constitute as "designer goods".
Those specific girls are probably into their makeup (or really like that product, the same way some people say iPod as opposed to MP3 player) and view the brand name as a form of description. I would imagine that if one of those girls lost her gloss/lipstick in the house and somebody saw her searching for something and asked "What are you looking for?", the response would be "My MAC lipglass!" or "My favorite Chanel lipstick!" It wouldn't be just "lipstick".
