Question for Catholic mommies-to-be

I was wondering if you put any thought into roughly when you would have the Baptism/ Christening for your little one.

I see so many parents having it right away after the birth (ie 3, 4 months old) and Im thinking will I be odd man out if I wait a few months before planning. The reason for this is theres so much work already going into the baby shower, the nursery, the birth, getting settled at home...it just seems all to much to do the Christening a couple months later.

Any thoughts? TIA

i honestly haven't put TOO much thought into it yet. I may want to find out about shots and things like that prior to her being around 'so many people' - ya know???

We may be waiting as well - just not sure yet!

We had the Christenings for our boys when they wer both 4 months old and it was fine. With DS#1 I wanted to be back at work a little before having the Christening. I felt that 4 months was a good amount of time each time. There were parents that had their children being Baptised older - I think one baby was a year old. Do it when you feel you are ready.

Re: Question for Catholic mommies-to-be

My church recommends between 2 and 4 months. I Baptized my DS just shy of 3 months, and I plan on Baptizing the new Baby around the same time.

I didn't even think about Emerson's Christening until she was 3 months old. She was christened at almost 5 months.

My son was 5 months old when we had his christening.
I didn't want to wait that long but we had another family christening before that and then everyone was away for summer vacations.

I am due in August and would like to have it before it starts getting colder. I would like the baby to be at least 8 weeks old (for germ purposes).

There are a lot of baptism questions lately. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am due June 20th. The baby's baptism will be on August 2nd. We booked it last week for a few reasons. The first reason is that I would like to have the baptism before I go back to work in Septembmer. The second is that my parents and the godparents live out of town so we tried to work with everyone's schedules. This way the godparents can come and visit for a few days and spend some time with us and the baby.

Re: Question for Catholic mommies-to-be

I haven't put much thought into the Christening yet either. I do know that the Godmother lives in PA, the Godfather in VA, my family in NY and DH's family in Indiana so pretty much as soon as we can get everyone together in one place we'll have it. I would like to shoot for no later than the holidays in December (due in September).

Re: Question for Catholic mommies-to-be

I am due August 26th & originally wanted to Christen the baby by October (we are travelling OOT in November) but that is not going to work since my SIL is due in October. She is the Godmother. I am also dealing with my entire family being OOT but they live in the "snow country" so I am thinking that we might either do it in December before "winter" settles in or wait until the spring. I am also keeping in mind my SIL & brother travelling with the new baby. As you can see, it is all in the air Chat Icon

Re: Question for Catholic mommies-to-be

With my first child, she was almost 8 months when we Baptized her. I didn't want to wait that long but time just kind of slipped away from us. DD was born with clubbed feet (so we were dealing with full leg casts & then these special bar shoes) and she had terrible colic for the first 3 months so I didn't even *think* of planning anything then. When I went back to work (she was 4 months), it was like a whirl wind!

This time we may not wait as long but we'll have to wait and see.

Re: Question for Catholic mommies-to-be

I am due July 4th... we are planning to have the baby babptized by the end of the summer/early September. To me, it's just something that's very important to us that we want done ASAP. Also, DH and I are both teachers and so we would like to have the baptism and the party before he goes back to work.

Same here!!

The reason we are even waiting this long is we want to have the after party outside at our house. With DS he was christened in Jan and we had it at a restaurant.

Re: Question for Catholic mommies-to-be

we had DS' baptism when he was 2.5 months old, but only because it was convenient for us to do so (we wanted it in NY, and we happened to be there for Christmas). we also didn't do a big party or anything, just a luncheon at a restaurant for family and closest friends.

i don't think there's a specific timeframe for the christening, so i say take as much time you need to plan and have it when you are comfortable!
