Question for MrsTC /Suven/any other HR person
Is there any type of NY law about companies moving and how many miles you will need to commute?
Sometime next year my place may move 39 miles (according to mapquest) away from my home - do I have any options? It also doesn't seem like it will be easy to get to with public transportation
TIA

Re: Question for MrsTC /Suven/any other HR person
I spoke to my FH, who is HR, and he says he is not aware law that may protect you from this at all. The employer is not obligated to offer you anything to supplement you transition to their new location. An employer has to do what is best for the employer, and moving in one direction benefits some employees by shortening their commute, and it may adversely affect others.
Some companies will provide flexible options such as allowing you to temporarily change your work schedule so you can adjust to the new commute, also some companies provide transportation allowances that you may take advantage of. But unfortunately, the employer is not required to offer you anything.
FH's second employer is also planning on moving next year about another 15 miles away. RIght now he gets there with 5 minutes to spare since he leaves his first job and goes directly there. He is not sure what he is going to do, besides trying to start half hour later.

Re: Question for MrsTC /Suven/any other HR person
I do know someone who was able to collect unemployment for a situation like this because the employer moved more than a specified distance from the old location and it was not feasible to get there via public transportation. But, this was not in NY State.
Look into that - maybe you can collect unemployment while you get a new job?

It is true that you may be able to collect unemployment. However, you MUST NOT go to work AT ALL in that new location. Once you do that, you jeopardize being able to collect.
Thank you for that piece of info! Of course my boss wants me to "try it out" first and I'm afraid if I go once that's it, I'm s c r e w e d
Thank you for all of your replies, hopefully this happens way in the future or not at all
