Question for NYC public school teachers
Is it true that you are not allowed to tell a parent the name of a child who hit their child? For instance, if Mrs A comes to pick up her kindergarten child and is told by the teacher, "we had an incident and your child was punched by another child today," are you (the teacher) not allowed to tell Mrs. A which child hit her child?
I was talking with my doctor's PA and she said that her son was hit by a child in his class. When the teacher told her, she asked, "who hit him?" The teacher responded by saying she wasn't allowed to identify the child. Granted, the child told his mother who did it, but I'm trying to understand if what the teacher said is true policy.

Re: Question for NYC public school teachers
I could be wrong but I think it's the same policy on Long Island.

Question for NYC public school teachers
My daughter is in a pre-k class on Long Island and if there is an incident, the teachers are not allowed to name a specific name.

It was the same at my DD's daycare and Pre K. I believe it's the same at her elementary school though I haven't had any experience with it yet thankfully

Yes, this is the case for NYS, not just NYC.

Question for NYC public school teachers
Pretty sure that is the policy everywhere. At daycare, they will always write DS' "friend" hit him.
I work at a HS and if there is an incident involving multiple students, you write up each student separately and you never refer to the other students by name. Something like this: "Johnny was walking down the hall when he got into an altercation with another student. Johnny said "XYZ" to the other student and then the other student punched him."

Re: Question for NYC public school teachers
I think its everywhere too.
My DC daycare never told us who the other child was even if your child is the one who is doing the hurting.
Even in my DD K class she got in a little trouble (nothing serious like hitting )where it did evolve another student when I asked the teacher for specifcs she just said my DD name and another student and she wouldn't say who the other student was though I knew cause my DD told me.

Question for NYC public school teachers
Yes I believe that's a New York state policy. However once your child can speak they can basically tell you what happened anyway.

Re: Question for NYC public school teachers
That is true. They are obligated to protect everyone involved.
I remember when my DD bit another child in day care and they did tell the other parents who did it. I flipped. What if those parents were nuts and wanted to retaliate? People are crazy.

Re: Question for NYC public school teachers
Definitely the same in LI. There is a boy on my son's bus who cursed at him repeatedly. My son ignored him & then finally spoke up for himself & the kid hit him. I got a report with the name of the child redacted by a black sharpie. It happened this week for the second time & I demanded the child's name because I plan to call transportation to have him switched to a different bus route (which is a viable option on our case as my son attends school out of district) & wanted to provide solid reasoning. The principal told me she would love to tell me but has her hands tied & absolutely can't. Instead she offered to call in as well to provide transportation with more details. My son can only give a first name & it's a common name to the point that there could easily be more than one boy by that name on the bus.
