Question for teachers about weddings
Hi! I'm in the process of choosing a wedding date. Did all of you get married in the summer b/c you are a teacher? i love the warm weather so I'm def. getting married in the summer but I really like June. I'm just afraid it would be too much with school still in session. So my question is did any of you get married in the school year? and if so how did you manage? did you take some days off? were you allowed? I want to get married the end of June but i think that Public school (where i intend to be by the time i get married) ends very late in june (my private school ends the 21st of this year). Ok ive spoken enough..sorry its so long!

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married in October, worked Monday-Thursday got married Friday and returned on Monday.
It was a sacrifice, but worth the position. I will be taking a honeymoon this summer.
Lucky for me, DH is understanding of my career goals.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married in July bc it was the most convenient Some districts give you personal days for your wedding - maybe 2-3

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married in April, the week after Easter. I took a week off, and my prinicipal did not have a problem with it at all. I made sure all my lessons were planned and has everything ready for the sub. Good luck!

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married in July.
Being a high school teacher, it's really not possible to get married in June and take even one day off, espcially with Regents review adn everything is just crazy that time of the year. I know this year doesn't end until the 26th or something like that.
I got married about 10 days after school ended and I was still rushed with last minute things, packing things for the catering hall etc. I remember cutting my menus in btwn grading Regents exams I feel like I had just enough time.
I do have co-workers who got married over Feb break and Thanksgiving weekend (but delayed their honeymoon) but most are over the summer.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married on Sunday in October. I took off the Friday before and the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after. We took our honeymoon in July - about 8 months after the wedding.
For us, it was a no-brainer. We both wanted to get married in the fall and didn't let my job affect our decision.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
Got married in October (on a Saturday), took Friday and Monday as personal days. Just had our honeymoon, went during February break. It was okay. Stressful with all of the dress drama I had.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
Thank you for responding. I hope I get in a school/district that doesn't mind if i take one or two personal days! If anything I will probably aim for July.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married in the summer but I know of many brides (co-workers and friends) who got married during the school year and they were able to pull it off beautifully! I cannot speak for their stress level but it definitely was not noticeable at the wedding. Many of my co-workers were also able to take off a few days prior to the wedding to get ready for it and they honeymooned during one of the school vacations.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
We got married in august which gave me most of the summer to get all the "little things" done. We got back from our honeymoon two days before school started.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I was married day after Thanksgiving....I took off the entire M-F week afterwards for the HM.
All I had to do was write a letter requesting unpaid leave for those 5 days due to my wedding.
I left a weeks worth of plans and the worst part was having to come back

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
Dh and I got married over my April Break, three years ago. We got married on Saturday night, left early Sunday morning for our cruise, were on our honeymoon that Monday to Sunday and had to go back to work the following Wednesday.
Everything worked out perfectly for us!!!

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
Got married over the April break. We had a week and two days that year, so we were able to take our honeymoon. But then I had to go back to school the day after I got back from vacation. In my district, the contract allows for one day off for a wedding, I requested, and was granted, an additional day as well so I would have Thursday and Friday off before the Saturday wedding.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married in August so I could do the last minute things.
Two teachers in my district recently got married. Since we only get 2 personal days to use, they took two sick days for their honeymoon. Although the principal was aware of this, the superintendent found out and docked them pay AND SENIORITY
My stepfather was a superintendent for many years. There was nothing more obnoxious to him then teachers who get married and want to take a honeymoon during the year. He thinks that should be left for the summertime.
Just make sure you are really aware of your school's policy - no matter WHAT the principal says...

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
i got married in june 2005... i was able to work it out perfectly the district i was in at the time got out june 17th... our wedding was the 25th. SO, i was able to have a whole week before the wedding to do last minute thigns, AND have the rest of the summer after the wedding to move in and get settled in our new house like others have said, i would be REALLY careful about taking days off during the school year, especially your first couple years on the job. teachers get so many days off already, that it doesn't look that great if you try to take extra days...

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
We got married over February break of 2005. I took a week off before the break so we could take our honeymoon...my school didn't have a problem with that. I know that some do...and to that I say..you only get married once! And unfortunately, teaching (as noble as it is) doesn't pay me enough to be able to afford a summer wedding. Getting married in February was pretty much our only option, but we're really glad we did it that way. Best of luck to you, whatever you decide!

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married in May of 2005. Took off the Thursday and Friday before, got married Saturday, back to work on Monday. The policy in my district is pretty strict with the amount of personal days allowed for weddings, so we booked the wedding knowing that we would delay the honeymoon until the summer. This worked perfectly for us because it allowed us an extra long honeymoon (3 weeks) and time to adjust to living together (we moved in after the wedding).
Check your school's policy on days off for weddings. As you can tell from the different posts, some schools are much more lenient than others.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
Some teachers in my school have gotten married on holiday weekends (Memorial and Columbus Day). They got married on Friday or Saturday and took a personal day Thursday and Tuesday so they could go on a mini moon (they had to get the 2 personal days ok'd by the superintendent bc we aren't supposed to take off the day before or after a holiday, but he had no problem with it at all.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
I got married this past October. DH & I love the fall so we wanted to get married then.
I took 3 days off around the wedding and we are taking our honeymoon in 4 weeks. We wanted to wait until we had a longer break.
I say if you plan well it is fine. My district doesn't give us a hard time about taking personal days so it worked out fine.

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
The date was set before I got my job teaching. My principal was cool with it and encouraged me to take extra days off to get settled to being married. We were married April 28th last year, firday night and left EARLY sat for the Bahamas for a quick 4 days. I came back to work Thurs. There were no problems and it was almost a week off. I hate to take days off!

Re: Question for teachers about weddings
DH and I both work in the same building. We got engaged and then booked our wedding for Oct. 20th knowing it was during the school year. All the administrators were fine with it, but we needed to take a personal unpaid leave for our HM, which we intended to be on a vacation, but ended up booking right after our wedding. I would do it all over!
ETA- we were both tenured when we got married!
