Question for those that have been on cruises?

We are thinking about maybe taking a cruise this year or next year. A lot of my friends and co-workers have been on cruises and love them. I am a little concerned because DH gets seasick if the boat is moving up and down. So when you are on the boat can you feel any movement? I would hate to go and he be sick the entire time. Chat Icon Also the rooms are so small looking. Did you feel like you were in a cell at all? Thanks for any help. Chat Icon

Re: Question for those that have been on cruises?

my dh gets seasick as well as his mom. We've all been on 3 cruises so far, and so far so good. as a precaution, we have the Dr. prescribe a medication called meklazine (sp?). he takes it the first day or so and then doesnt need it after that, he probably doesnt even need it at all. I try to go on the biggest ship out there, or one of, and never cruise during hurricaine season. we go every february and have never been sick yet, HTH

ETA: we did the inside cabin once, the the next 2 we got a balcony, while the inside one was horrible, definitely spend a little more for the fresh air access!

Re: Question for those that have been on cruises?

I did get very seasick one day on my first cruise. Our room was up front and weather was bad. It lasted a day, then it was gone.

My cousin gets seasick very easily. She got a Rx for the ear patches, even with those one, she got sick one night..

But I have never witnessed wide spread seasickness, where the whole boat has it. A friend that went with me on one has horrible sickness, she wore a bracelet the whole time that had an electric current. She wasn't sick once.

you can feel the boat a little. my DH is the worst, he gets seasick so bad and he was fine on the cruise. maybe you can buy some Bonine and he can take that a few times a day. it's chewable and works pretty good. i used it also and i was fine

The ships are so big and they have these mechanisims in them to keep them relatively stable. Kinda like a big pendulum. If you get a room in the middle of the ship you really won't get seasick, until the sea is REALLY choppy or something.

We love cruising, it's so relaxing!

Re: Question for those that have been on cruises?

I also suffer from seasickness so I feel his pain! I got non-drowsy motion sickness pills and they worked wonders! We went on a cruise for our HM and another one since then and I didn't actually get sick on either. DH (who claims he has never gotten seasick in his life Chat Icon Chat Icon ) actually ended up using the pills a little more than me. The stabelizers in the ship really make a big difference too. Also, most of the travelling was done at noght and I sleep AMAZINGLY when the ship is moving! I'm like a baby in a car Chat Icon

Kim, I'm not a fan of cruises. But take my opinion with a grain of salt, since a lot of people love them.

I went on a 3 day RCCL cruise on Majesty of the Seas to tha Bahamas. IMO, the pool was small and I didn't like the food very much. It also looked a little run down.

I have major motion sickness, and every night at about 6pm, I'd take a Dramamine and have to go lie down. Looking out the windows of the dining room made it worse, so it was good that our room had no windows. Our room was in the middle floor in the center of the ship, where you have the least movement, but I was nauseous anyway. It doesn't seem to be common, though, and I was told that our ship was on the small side and that could have contributed to the nausea.

Our room was TINY! We didn't do much but sleep there. We walked around Nassau all day, and spent the other one on Coco Cay. The limited space wasn't a bother.

The motion sickness alone is enough to keep me from doing another cruise, plus it isn't my "style" of travelling. I think we could have picked a larger, newer ship on a cruise line known for yummy food and that would have done a lot to improve the experience.

Hope that helps!

I LOVE cruises!! There is NO way he'll feel the boat rocking. We've always been mid-ship and around deck 7 and we've never felt anything.Chat Icon

Thanks ladies! I think if we do do one I should start with a short one like 3 or 4 days. All the ones on NCL out of New York are 7+ days. I would hate to be trapped on a ship for that long with a sick hubby. We know men are babies Chat Icon Chat Icon

I LOVE cruises and love rooms with balconies......
I used to get worry about getting seasick.
But there are always solutions and you don't feel the boat moving at all.....
The Doctor can either prescribe Meclizine 25mg or more which is for motion sickness.
Also they have patches that in my opinion are actually better. You put 1 small patch behind your ear. You need prescription for the patches. For the other medication noted above, there are some medications that have it already but a lower strength and you can buy over the counter.
For cruises leaving out of NYC, the waters are a bit rougher.....
And Enjoy !!!!

We use Ginger pills . All natural , over the counter and you do not get sleepy from them. Just ask pharmicist of u can use them. We usually get a balcony to make the room bigger. We love to cruise! Feel free to FM mail me. Chat Icon
PS They are buildng a new ship yard in Brooklyn and there will be a lot more boats leaving out of NY this summer. We are going on the Crowne Princess, sister ship to The Carribbean Princess. and brand new boat.

Rebecca, we are a bird of the same feather. I went on a 4 day cruise for my sister's wedding and I hated it. Even while taking dramamine, I was still sea sick and I constantly felt "trapped" on the boat at night. But the killer was even after we got off the boat, I was still "sea" sick 2 days after the cruise.
Funny thing about the room. When I first opened the door I thought we were walking into a closet. I said, "Wow this is a huge walk in closet" That's when I was told it was our room. My expression: Chat Icon

Re: Question for those that have been on cruises?

Ok, I get super seasick and I have been on 3 cruises and plan on more- I LOVE THEM.

I take Bonine as soon as I wake up, I chew 2 and thats all I need for the entire day.

and you DO feel the boat moving, maybe not rocking unless its a rough sea, which can easily happen in the carribean, but you def feel the motors of the ship and thats enough for someone who is sensitive to make them sick.

But trust me, taking the Bonine, its over the counter works AWESOME and you can still drink too! The ear patches and the prescription meds you cannot drink with. I have also used the Sea Bands, they work but very annoying.

I would never stay in an inside room b/c I also have a touch of cloustephobia- I dont know how to spell it, so for the first 2 times we got the BIG, NOT Porthole Oceanview room and the 3rd we got the Balcony and I have to say I will only get Balcony from now on, the rooms are just bigger and you can get fresh air.

Our first cruise was a 4 day out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and coming home we ran into a Tropical Cyclone- Holy Moly- the boat was SLAMMIN the waves, Alarms were going off from 730 pm till midnight from the crashing of the ship, the 8 dinner was canceled, we were all instructed to stay in our rooms, all shows were canceled, my DH ventured out b/c he couldnt stay in the room with it rocking like that so he went out and said he almost fell off the stairs outside and there was kitty litter everywhere from passengers puking. I called for the Steward to get me something b/c that was my first cruise and I only knew about the sea bands and that was NOT enough for that. It was scary but I went on another cruise after that a 7 day and again just recently on a mediteranean cruise for 8. and I hope we do another one this year too.

Dont worry stock up on Bonine! You guys will love it! I think its more the ship and what they offer that can make a cruise stink!

we always stay in the middle of the ship and in the middle of how many decks the cruise has too.

edited to say-- after a day or so you will get your sea legs, you will h ear that term a lot on the boat, and yes when you get off, you will still kinda feel like you are on the boat. Just like an elevator sometimes when you get off you still feel like youre on it, but it goes away when you get your sea legs.

Re: Question for those that have been on cruises?

It really depends on the boat and weather...
We went back in Nov and we def felt it. Once or twice felt sick...But not in our room, more when we were walking around the boat.
But you can always use the patch. I have heard good things about it

Re: Question for those that have been on cruises?

I love cruising! I've been on a few. Most recently our HM 2 months ago. We went to the Mediterranean. This was the first time I ever felt any movement on the ship. We hit some choppy waters in Greece and going from France to Spain was a little rough, but than again we were the very first cabin at the front of the ship, on the highest deck where there are cabins. All my other cruises I've been in the middle and have never felt a thing. I would also amke sure you have a balcony or at least a big window. I was fine with having a window (not a porthole). I just could never do a inside cabin. I'm too claustrophobic.
