Question for those with corner property and side yards.

hello! We have a rear dormered Cape, which we will be front dormering in the next few months. We don't have too much of a backyard, we have two side yards One side with swingset etc. and the other side has a pool. Our blueprints show no windows on one side of the house. I am guessing it is to maximize our space and for structural issues since it will be two bedrooms on that side. Both bedrooms will have windows. one, on the back of the house and the other, on the front of the house . My question is, how important is it for you to be able to see outside on the sides of your house from upstairs? Thanks for your advice!

We look outside from upstairs to see the weather in the morning and if we missed the garbage man.

Thanks for your reply. I will be able to see out of the front of the house, and the corner side. I guess I'm just concerned if I am upstairs doing laundry or something that I can't look at and see the kids in the backyard since that side may not have windows.

It is extremely important to be able to see the side of your house from upstairs. Deal breaker IMO on that plan. Corner lots often have issues that inside lots do not (people parking, dumping or throwing garbage, dogs pooping and owners leaving it, etc). From experience it would be a big mistake if you did not allow any windows on the side. I also had a house that you could not see the front from upstairs and it was AWFUL. For ex, if you hear a screech outside, a car accident, anything at all, you cannot see. NO GOOD IMO, never, must be able to see al sides from upstairs.

I would want a window on the sides. Especially to see outside and to allow for a cross breeze in the bedrooms.

I only have 1 window to see the side of my house. It's not a deal breaker, but if we were redoing things, I would absolutely include side windows. My side yards are very narrow and I would still want the option of seeing them. What you describe - I would definitely want windows!

We have window on the side of the house that faces the road, but not the side that is adjacent to our neighbors. It's never bothered me. I however have a backyard and can see into it.

It would annoy me not to have windows on all sides. I see plenty of people do it, especially when dormering (put no windows on the side either for privacy or cost.

For me its 2 reasons, light and cross ventilation. IMHO, you should have windows on 2 sides of a bedroom if possible.

we did casements up high 2ft high 4 ft wide on 2 of the bedrooms that let in light and air and you can put a dresser under them since they are high.

For you if you're looking to look out the window, I'd go with something lower.

Aesthetically, I think it looks weird to see a side of a house without windows.

We are on a corner with a side yard and no window on the side. The bedroom on that side of the house has a window in the front and a window in the back, but none on the side. It has never been a problem - from the front and back windows we can see pretty much the entire side (maybe not ALL of it, but a good portion of it) It has never bothered me, but we don't have young children. The only reason I want to put in a window on the side is for more cross ventilation.

ETA: We do have a window on the side on the main level of the house

Thanks! I don't think it will change the cost for me and cross ventilation is def a major plus. I will see what the contractor thinks thanks!

We only have windows on one side of our house - it doesn't bother me. The side with the windows I feel like I am looking into my neighbors house and yard all the time so i keep those blinds closed. Lol. We can see into the front and backyards no problem.

I would think what adding a side window will do to the furniture placement in the room. The rooms we have back and side windows leave a lot less room for furniture placement

We have a corner lot raised ranch. We have a big yard in the back. All of our windows are either in the front or back- which lets me see the driveway/main street and the back yard. I can't see the side street or in between my house and my neighbor. I've been in my house for 14 years and have never had an issue. It never even occurred to me that it would be weird not to have windows on the side.

We have a corner property with side and back yards. We have windows on all sides, both upstairs and downstairs. I like to be able to look out and see my entire property. I would definitely have them add windows on all sides.
