Questions about checking on your babies

If you hear, lets say, a cough on the monitor-do you check on them?

Also, we sit on our screen porch with the monitor on-so when I go inside I always HAVE to check on them. If you think about checking on your baby(ies) so you feel like you MUST check on them.

I ask because my husband thinks I am a nutbagChat Icon

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

Hmmmn....my babies are 6 1/2, almost 5 and almost 3 yrs old and I check on them a few times a night. So I don't think you're nuts. I don't check after every cough but I probably did when they were small infants. I think I've checked them to see if they are breathing more times than I can count. It's a Mommy thing I guess.

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

yes, I check on my newborn constantly. If I ignore even a tiny little peep out of DD, I immediately have a feeling that something horrible will happen Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My son is never away from me so no need to check on him Chat Icon Chat Icon

In my defense I wish I could get him to sleep somewhere else but that's just not working for us yet.
But if he were in his crib I probably would be checking on him all the time. I remember always watching DD in the monitor and going in to check on her. You're not nuts.

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

WHen he was first born, yes- I had the monitor closeby at all times! Now he's 5 1/2 months and there are some nights I don't turn the monitor on until we go to bed (we can hear him from the LR). I can count on one hand the amount of times I have actually gone INTO his room to check on him. I never want to risk waking him Chat Icon

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

DC are almost 6 and almost 3. We don't bother checking any more. DD has fallen out of her toddler bed a few times (we've put stuffed animals around now so she has a soft landing pad Chat Icon ), but we figured, if she wasn't crying, she probably slept through it, so why bother risking waking her up?

They both know that we have the monitors in their room, and we will come immediately if they call us, so if they don't call, we don't check.

Even when they were younger, we got used to when they were just making noise versus needing help, and would only check if they made "help me" type sounds.

(We did have the AngelCare motion sensor for the first several months, though..... we're not THAT hands-off... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

It depends.

As a newborn I’d check every cough, sniffle, rustle and whimper… AND I’d always go in if I didn’t hear a peep at all.. TOO QUIET

She’s 6months now. She has a cold I can hear it in her cough and no I don’t check on her. But if it’s a wet cough, phlegmy or just sounds like a lot of effort I check in on her to let her know I’m there as support. If she sneezes, no checking. If she’s talking to herself in her room, no checking. Again, if its super quiet I HAVE to check on her.

If she’s in her room and we are passing by it.. I always tell him to check or I stop in to check myself. I mean you’re walking right by it.. why not?

Am I neurotic? ……….. for so many more reasons than this, I can tell you “YES”

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

I check on DD only when her room is silent! I know that sounds strange, but DD is a very noisy sleeper. She squeaks and grunts pretty much the entire night, (as well as during her naps) so we now know that's normal for her. I only get nervous when it's absolutely silent and that's when I check.

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

this is precisely why I have a video monitor, so I am not constantly getting out of bed. We keep the volume down, because I can hear her, but I wanted to be able to see her as well.

And for the record, DH thinks I am TOTALLY nuts in all things mommy related.

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

never, if he miraculously is sleeping at the moment, I will not crack that door open for anything! Chat Icon

I have the motion sensor... so if he were to stop breathing an alarm would sound.... barring that nightmare scenario, I would only go in if I heard a huge noise or really bad coughing....
DS is 5 mo

You are not a nutbag...I checked on you and your sister every night before I went to bed and loved to watch you sleep. It is important to check on the babies especially since they just got over RSV.

Re: Questions about checking on your babies

For a "noise" I'll usually just glance at the video monitor.

But I do check on him nightly before I go to bed. I guess it's for peace of mind.
