questions regarding Milk Allergies, Acid Reflux, and other belly issues

How did your Dr determine that your DC had a milk alergy, or acid reflux, or anything else? What type of test?

Before your DC was diagnosed, I am assuming they were very fussy during the day but how were they at night? If they were sleepingat night, did they wake from pain?

What was given to your DC to finally help them with their discomfort & how long did it take to work?

Re: questions regarding Milk Allergies, Acid Reflux, and other belly issues

Chloe was a mess during the day, slept ok though. She had blood in her stool which was visable. Her reflux is being treated with Zantac, doesnt work too well but while she spits up a LOT ( about 6 times a feeding) , she doesnt eyll fromt he pain so its not a medication needed problem.

The milk allergy has been solved by giving her the RX formula Elecare.

She saw a pediatric GI.

eta- She was better within 24 hours, by 2 weeks she was like a different baby completly.

Re: questions regarding Milk Allergies, Acid Reflux, and other belly issues

DS had his poop checked for a milk allergy and also a scope test. He was a silent refluxer which is extremely difficult to diagnose, hence the scope test. That was after many weeks of "What is wrong with my baby?" doctor visits and questions.

DS did not sleep well at all....He was extremely uncomfortable on his back and would wake every hour. Almost had a psychcotic break during those early months from lack of sleep and general worry about DS's health.

He was eventually put on Zantac and prescription formula. Kids react differently to reflux treatments and you have to find what works for your DC.

If you suspect reflux, see a specialist. They are the experts and can help you find relief for your DC.

Re: questions regarding Milk Allergies, Acid Reflux, and other belly issues

I think I need to be more persistant the next time at the Ped office. At every visit, I always describe how DS screams whever he is awake unless he is eating. During the night, he doesn't wake up from pain though as far as I can tell since he isn't screaming. I feel that they brush off my concerns. I suspect acid reflux. I also had it for years.

DS was never able to lay flat on his back, he would throw up. We've tried 6 formulas now & nothing seems to help.

Should I just see a specialist on my own without a Dr's approval?

VERY gassy, she would not sleep, very irritable. She has silent reflux also. I was brushed off by her ped at the time although I was persistant that something was wrong with her. They changed her formula 4 times with no improvement. I finally took her to GI on my own b/c I didn't need a referral from ped and the GI tested her stool for blood which was positive. She was started on nutramigen AA and within 2 days she was a different baby.

This makes me so mad! Why wouldn't a Ped trust what the baby's parent is telling them? Time was wasted that the baby could have been pain free. My DS screams bloody murder. It's the same with me. At our next visit, I am going to tell the Ped to test for acid reflux and milk allergy or I will switch Dr;s.

Re: questions regarding Milk Allergies, Acid Reflux, and other belly issues

DS #1 was diagnosed when he kept getting chronic ear and throat infections. DS #2 showed the signs from the day he was born - spitting up after all meals, smell of curdled milk, etc.

The acid refux stopped in both of them immediately. DS#1 stil cannot take too much milk, but can tolerate small doses. DS #2 cannot have any (cow) milk product other than yogurt with live cultures. Neither one of the tested positive on the allergy test, however.

DD's milk protein allergy was diagnosed early on - she was fussy, screaming, fighting feedings, and there was blood in her poop - tiny red specks but visible to the eye. Switched to Alimentum and saw improvement almost immediately. This was at like 2 weeks old. After this, she still occasionally would fight a feeding, but not very much so the ped thought maybe reflux but let's monitor before we put her on drugs. During her 6-week growth spurt, she was eating constantly, but she was actually eating. However, I noticed last week that this constant eating with some screaming was still happening now a few weeks later and DD was not actually taking in very much from her bottle unless it had been 2 1/2 - 3 hours from the last real feeding. I had read on here and in books that this is typical reflux behavior - the liquid soothes their throat on the way down so they demand it to wash down the acid but not really to eat very much. Called the ped the second I made the connection and she's now on Zantac - hoping this will work but was told it could take up to 2 weeks. She does seem to be demanding food less without eating much but she is still doing it some and still has extreme fussy/screaming periods but it's only been since Wednesday. So far I've been working with just my ped, but if I felt like the ped wasn't listening, I'd either find a new ped or go to a specialist. A lot of peds are not great at diagnosing these things from what I have read on here.

My DS does this with food. He demands it constantly. I even posted about overfeeding my baby several times. I thought it was that he just needed more food but it makes sense that the liquid soothes their throat on the way down so they demand it to wash down the acid. I used to have acid reflux until I took the little purple pill & eating used to help the burn.

Your DS could also be a big eater and I'm not a doctor, but this sounds like reflux to me - I would def advocate for your DS with the ped or go to a specialist or another ped. Good luck - it kills me to watch DD like this so I know how hard this must be on you! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
