Re: Questions to those who support Obama...

Looks like someone did a good job of instilling fear in you (probably the media)

If you don't know a lot about him, research him with non-biased material.

And do you really think Obama will be making all these decisions on his own? Besides his cabinet and homeland security, there's the CIA, FBI, congress, and a whole other bunch of agencies...

Either way I think both of the candidates that ran will have a mess to clean up...because of the worst president ..>GW

I agree very much with Kitty.

there was a great Frontline Program about both Obama AND Mccain that I think was very informative.

I think it says a lot quite frankly that people are more curious about Obama's upbringing and making it an issue over any other candidate...I would daresay EVER.

if you really want to know about him, try reading his book.

you can listen to what a supporter of his says, an opponent of his says, or you can listen to the man himself.

If you are looking for FOX News to tell you "we've cleared him, he's good" it's not going to happen.

Agree with Kitty and Ophelia. His preacher did say some awful things, but it doesn't mean Obama agrees with and supports them. You probably have family or friends you love dearly who say some things that make you Chat Icon from time to time. This is my take on his minister. His minister also was around during the civil rights movement and saw African Americans treated terribly in this nation. While much has changed, much has not, but I imagine seeing what he has seen could make someone very angry. Our invasion of Iraq was hardly an honorable activity either--thousands are dead on both sides and why? While I wouldn't use his words, I can understand some of the frustration with our current administration's actions.

Also, I think he may improve our relations with other countries greatly. He has shown himself to be diplomatic and by all reports, is a good listener. He is also steady, calm on the surface, and thoughtful. I saw all of these qualities as he ran his campaign and endured through a steady barage of attacks--many undeserved. I also feel our policy of not dealing with certain countries is not helping us, it cannot hurt to try and meet with them. The world reaction to his election was very encouraging as well--our allies at least seem delighted with this choice.

Also, I personally feel there has been more information about Barack Obama's life than any politician in my memory--many articles have been written about his upbringing in magazines including Time and Newsweek, and there are his books as well. He is hardly a mystery man if you take some time to read about him. His story is veyr compelling to me--besides being biracial, he has really pulled himself up. He came from a broken family, never knew his father, and did not come from a family of wealth or influence. His life story does fulfill the American idea that anyone can pursue their dreams here.

I am glad you are looking for answers, and trying to look beyond the scare tactics.

We live in an information wave. It is so easy to research things I am wondering why if you are actually in a scared state would you post this question here. If I was actually scared of McCain I would read every single thing about him. I would not just ask people on a board.

The folks that are scared right now due to lack of knowledge on Obama I really feel sorry for them because the world is going to pass you by and you will be left behind. Information is at our fingertips. If you are not on information overload at this time in the United States of America you are being left behind.

I'm an Obama supporter and a McCain supporter and I think I know entirely too much about them. If I answered your question on Obama I would write a book.

Start with his two best seller books and then research research research research research and get involved. Just don't sit in a scared state please.

Re: Questions to those who support Obama...

I was for Hillary, then made the Obama switch when I had to.

For me, the minister thing was VERY hard.

But at the same time, I sit in a Catholic church once a week and many would find issue with that.

2nd...watching Katrina for me was a very hard thing. That was me, in NY, watching on TV. That was a true feeling that America had let people down. I sat and watched...saddened, disgusted.

3rd...the war in Darfur. why are we in Iraq? If we have to be somewhere, why not Darfur?

So, to me the minister was saying to the church that he understands the frustrations they have with America. I don't know what its like to be a black American, I will never know. I had to let it go and focus on the good. Obama never even said it...you know? ITs different if those words came from his mouth.

Re: Questions to those who support Obama...

I agree with what everyone else has said here about the minister. I believe Obama has enough intelligence to sit in church and decide for himself whether he agrees with the minister or not.

In terms of national security - I truly truly believe that we will be more successful in defending the country with words rather than guns. Do some internet searching and see what the leaders around the world are saying about Obama. They are looking forward to working with him - they are hoping he's willing to enter into talks with them - not wars, but talks!

As for his background - like the others have said, there is PLENTY of information out there about him. I think people feel they don't know anything about him because they haven't uncovered any deep dark secrets - that's because they're probably not there! I can't imagine what more anyone would want to know - his father was Kenyan, his mother American, they met at the University of Hawaii. He left the family by the time Barack was 2 and went back to Kenya where he was a noted economist. He died in a car accident in 1981. His mother remarried and moved to Indonesia with Barack and her new husband. Obama was in Indonesia until the age of 10 when he went back to Hawaii and lived with his grandparents. He met Michelle in 1988 and the married in 1992. He has two daughters who are 7 and 10. That's the short version - what is it that you feel you're missing?

Ditto. I know more about Barack Obama than I know about some of my close friends and probably some of my own family members.......and I was initially a Hillary supporter.

As for Rev. Wright, he said NOTHING that I have not heard in my own church at one time or another. And hopefully you listened to the ENTIRE service and not just the 30 second loop that was taken out of context.

It was not shocking at all to me or most of my church members to hear the politics of Rev. Wright from the pulpit. Does that mean that I agree with every word coming from the mouth of my pastor, NOT AT ALL. And I would not walk out of the service over the remarks nor would I stop attending the church services. Barack was not in attendance during that service so attributing the 30 sec. clip to Barack was ridiculous in my opinion.

That is like attributing every word from my pastor to me, whether or not I agree or was even in close enough proximity at the time to object to what was said.

ETA: I do think that Barack Obama will protect this country just as McCain would have if elected. However, I think Barack Obama will talk first and use force later.

The US does a lot of underhanded crap. We have some treacherous people in this country that have tortured people, killed unarmed women and unarmed children - all under the cover of being "classified". My friend's dad works on a special forces team for the U.N. and he cannot even tell his family where he is or where he's going most of the time.....but it's never a good thing when he has to leave in the middle of the night. He cannot tell us what he's seen but we all know that it's not good.

Some of the secret orders are coming to light though - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/10/washington/10military.html

Rev. Wright saying that 9/11/01 was "Chickens coming home to roost" is not a new sentiment. Lots of people believe this.....it's just likely not on video.

Re: Questions to those who support Obama...

As far a Rev Wright goes....

if you were running for office in Obama's neighborhood - you would have gone to that church as well

it's a huge church- not some secret basement meeting place
