Quick ? for the PE teachers
This week both of my kids (1st & 2nd grade) had to take a written test in gym. Anyone know what this is about? Is it just our district or state-wide?
The questions seemed kind of hard IMO, if they didn't do well is it going to be reflected in their report card?
One of the T/F questions my 2nd grader got was "Only adults feel stress." She told me she knew that was false since she was feeling stressed just taking the test.

Re: Quick ? for the PE teachers
I would assume it is a baseline assessment. Due to the new APPR guidelines and things like that, teachers have to have measured growth in each course, in addition to other things, which makes up a teacher's "grade" at the end of the year. Now, in a lot of courses, students will be given a baseline assessment and then another test at the end of the year which will measure if a student has learned anything during the course of the year. The test they took this week will probably not count for anything except for the teacher!

Re: Quick ? for the PE teachers
It's part of the NYS pre-assessments.
All teachers must give pre-assessments to all students who make up over 50% of their coursework. These "tests" will act as the baseline to assess the student and teacher (mostly teacher) for "growth" over the academic year.
They are not meant to study for it and to be perfectly honest, are not meant to do well, as the data forms the baseline to assess the teacher at the end of the year.
In theory, it's like taking a final exam on day one of a course and then taking the same final at the end of the year and measuring how much one has learned.
After we establish our baseline we then write our S.L.O. "Student Learning Objective" or our "target" (passing rate given the number and type of students we have) which we hope to hit. If we hit it we will be rated according to a scale... highly effective at the high end, ineffective on the low end.
That's my official explanation. If you want my "unofficial" explanation of it...
I'm spending all day today writing my SLO's... I might as well just throw a dart at the wall and call it a day

Yikes, I don't know how you guys stand being a teacher these days!
Not to be a jerk, but shouldn't the gym "test" be physical?

Very good question! Every time I meet a high school student/college student who wants to go into education I tell them the very real realities. It has changed RADICALLY since I started. I have had many a meltdown in the last few years... my DH can practically predict them and write them on the calendar. I do the best I can every day but I feel beaten up from ALL sides and feel like my own family and my own sanity is sacrificed.
And, I agree with you on the written test, however, they need to track the data and it has to be aligned with the Common Core (reading and writing).

I'm sure some are doing a physical test - like broad jump, pull ups etc.
In my district PE teachers are getting their building's ELA/English score, as the push is to integrate ELA/Language/even math into all subjects

Re: Quick ? for the PE teachers
It is more an attempt to measure the teacher then to measure the student....
With all of the pushes for new teacher evaluations , merit based pay etc. , the powers that be didnt really think through how teachers of non academic subjects would be "graded ". This has lead to things like written test in physical education class.
Eta: It does also have to do with the common core standards having to be integrated into all subjects.

Re: Quick ? for the PE teachers
Our District opted for written fitness based tests across all levels. We teach it contantly throughout the year and it ties in with Literacy.
We went against physical fitness testing because there are too many variables that could affect it. Are they exercising on their own after school, are they eating healthy, etc.
NO BASELINE TEST for any subject is used against the student. They retake the exam in June (Summative Assessment) and then it will be used. I teach HS, so I will use the Summative Test for 20% of their 4th quarter grade instead of the usual unit test. Seventy percent of my student body need to show 30% improvement from the baseline to the summative in June.

Re: Quick ? for the PE teachers
Our district is using Star Reading and math for the local. I wish they would let us use our baseline.
