Quiet cars on LIRR
LIRR expands quiet car pilot program
Starting Monday, June 18, the LIRR’s Quiet Car pilot program will be expanded to include all peak single-level electric trains that operate to/from Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal during the rush hours. Remember: the westernmost car on designated trains is the Quiet Car.
During the AM Peak, the FIRST CAR of your train is a Quiet Car. During the PM Peak, the LAST CAR of your train is a Quiet Car.
Customers Traveling On Quiet Cars Should:
Not use cell phones. Disable sounds on all electronic devices. Speak in a subdued voice. Use headphones at a volume others cannot hear.
Quiet Cars will be available on the following weekday trains: AM and PM Peak single-level electric trains to/from Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn.
The Quiet Car program is voluntary in nature. Conductors in designated cars will hand out special “Shh” cards to customers who are non-compliant.
In the event of a service disruption: If there is a service disruption or if a train is operating with a reduced number of cars, we will be unable to designate a Quiet Car. As always, we urge all customers to be considerate of their fellow passengers in all cars.
Hallelujah!

Re: Quiet cars on LIRR
I wish I was in a quiet car yesterday. Some woman spent the whole entire time on the phone talking to a co-worker, whining and complaining loudly for everyone to hear about how the boss was complaining about her attitude.
People have no boundaries anymore or sense of decency.

Re: Quiet cars on LIRR
For the most part, the express buses I ride are pretty quiet, but there are always exceptions.
Heading uptown on a city bus, a woman called everyone in her phone book to let them know she just got Botox. Oh gee wow. Then she told everyone she was riding the bus because with botox she couldn't afford a taxi. Poor baby, slumming on a city bus.
Later that morning heading downtown, there was a man who took a call on his cell phone. The woman sitting next to him started to read outloud. When he ended his call, she read silently. When he made another call, she started reading outloud again.
It was quite amusing because it took the guy a while to figure it out.

It would be even better if she was reading '50 Shades of Grey.'

Oh heck no - it was an OLDER (70-ish) lady. I would have peed my dress that day. Bad enough that I was sitting directly across from them.

This is the best! I've always been tempted to tape their call & play it back to them.

LOL! I love that.
On my train, there IS an older lady who is reading 50 Shades and she sometimes reads it aloud to her friend. It's so weird!

They should have made cars for this before they started the quiet car program!! Id rather listen to someones call than choke on the scent of someone who bathed in their cologne or the scent of someones cole slaw sandwich

Re: Quiet cars on LIRR
I ride Metro North and in the am I always sit in the quiet car. I have yet to see a Shh Card Smackdown. But there have been a few instances where non-commuters have gotten on the train and the conductor or other passengers have told them to be quiet.
But really, every car on my am train is usually a quiet car by default. I board at 5:55 and it's always very quiet- I believe the route starts at 5:20 or so. But there's always a very special kind of moron who will get on his/her phone and start talking very loudly. I've seen people get cursed out more than once.

Re: Quiet cars on LIRR
I sit in these cars so we shall see. I have told many people to lower their voices or turn down their music. Yes I am that person so we will see if it works. I got reprimanded once when I started committing bc I was talking too loud and never made that mistake again.
