Quote for painting interior of entire house?

We got a quote from our contractor and it's . 3bed, 2ba, two LRs, plus cathedral ceilings (20+ feet) in main floor.

Quote was $8700 and seems very unreasonable to me. Maybe $1k for paint, $1k for renting a scaffold but that still leaves $6700 for painting? Am I crazy?

I think painting is insanely expensive. We were quoted $450- $500 a room when we were starting our reno. Maybe try and contact painters directly and see what they say? General contractors make their money by marking up goods and services, although they often get a discount too that kind of offsets the markup.

If you do decide to either paint yourself or hire outside of your contractor, make sure you get very specific with your contractor about the shape you expect the walls to be in when he or she is done. After getting our quotes, we decided to paint ourselves. The drywall/ skim coat guys left the walls uneven (like bulges and gaps) and rough and in some places. When I asked the contractor about it, he said that smoothing and making them even was finish work that would be in the scope of the painting contractor's work. I'm not sure if it is industry practice, but just to make sure, I would be sure to include language in the proposal or contract stating that you want your walls "ready for primer" or something like that. Evening out drywall is dusty and a HUGE PITA

Hey... We used Panebianco painting on our old house.... The house was about 3000 Square feet and it cost about 4K...

We have since moved to a bigger house and the quote is only slightly more. The crew is WONDERFUL ...very clean, very curteous!! I would recommend them to anyone!

JNJ Painting 516-749-0031. The owner, Nick, donated his time and men to paint my newly renovated basement made for my sick husband about a year ago. His workers are fast and neat. A few friends have used him since and were very happy with both the price and work.

I have had both of my houses painted professionally. One cost $8000 (smaller home, about 1700 sq ft). Took one week of full days of a few guys to do the job. The other cost about $10,000, 2,200 sq feet. Took a few guys less than 2 weeks, 9-5.

Your estimate sounds accurate to me. Your cathedral ceilings alone will be costly.

I cant imagine you will ever find a professional company, who does the work in a quick time frame, for less than your quote.

I use a GREAT guy name Mike from Wantagh. He is fabulous. My contractor (DH's friend) told me that he did great work. Each bedroom was $500. My living, dining, hallway and stairway was $1,200 I think. PM me if you want his number.

That actually sounds about right to me. Our house sounds similar and my cousin has a painting business, even with a discount we paid about $6,000.

The quotes we got for a 4BR, 2.5 bath split level were between $3500-6K. We ended up using Willy the painter from recommendations here and paid about $5k.
