Random christmas tree question

SO dd will be about 21 months at Christmas time. I am so worried that she will mess with the tree big time. Did your children mess with the tree? What did you do to stop it?

I have a tiny ranch so it's not like I can put it upstairs or anything Chat Icon

Re: Random christmas tree question

I know some people will put a gate around there tree, I didn't have to do that with Julia, I just told her that she wasn't allowed to touch it and she never did, I was lucky I guess--lol

Re: Random christmas tree question

I’ve been wondering about this as well. I’m hoping she’ll just leave it alone—but that could be completely ignorant on my part Chat Icon

Ella was 18 months last Christmas, and she knew she wasn't allowed to touch it. Doesn't mean she didn't ever, but generally she stayed away.

Kate never ever touched the tree after I told her it was off limits (she was 3 mos, 15 mos, and 27 mos). I believed it was as easy as that! However, this year...with Abby...I just don't know. Chat Icon I'm going to try and lay down the law and take it from there. We won't be getting a gate or anything.

Re: Random christmas tree question

Last year Michael was 16 months old. We descorated the tree but did not put any lights on it and we also did not decorate the lower branches.

Last year we moved it to another part of the house where we had a gate so he couldn't get over to it.

I doubt that helps you too muchChat Icon SorryChat Icon

Re: Random christmas tree question

My SIL put a gate around it and only put ornaments which she didn't mind her DD playing with within her reach. We'll be doing the same this year with DS. Not the gate thing but the ornaments I mean.

Re: Random christmas tree question

DS was too little to do anything to it last year-he wasn't crawling yet. The bottom of our tree has already been empty for the last 2 years because of the dog and cat. The only other thing I'm going to do is leave off a couple precious breakables this year, just in case.
Our tree happens to go in a corner and it surrounded by the TV stand on one side and the couch on the other, so there really is only a tiny space in the middle where any real trouble can be caused. I'm more concerned about him following the cat under the tree and crawling all the way to the back corner and my not being able to get him out.

Re: Random christmas tree question

When my older two were little..and they were at the messing with the tree age--we decorated with star cookies and gingerbread cookies, u can also string cranberries.
it was the prettiest tree we ever had and if they put it in their mouth its fine.
When they got older, they did not think they can eat ornaments..they got the pic.
The smell in the house is also awesome.
You can also wrap faux big boxes and put around it to kind of keep them away.
I don't care for the gates

Re: Random christmas tree question

Last year I put it on one of our side table that is round. That was mostly because of my dogs.

This year, the superyard will protect whatever I can.

Re: Random christmas tree question

I was wondering the same thing. I think we might get a gate for it, cause DD is already a pulling terror. I have a feeling my DH is going to want a HUGE tree this year (since the great room ceiling are soooooooooooo high). I don't need her pulling it downChat Icon

Re: Random christmas tree question

they'll only be 7 months when the tree goes up, so i think we'll be OK

when they get older, we'll try reinforcing "no touching the tree" and see how that goes Chat Icon

sadly, i used to put up a village, which i can't do because the pieces (some of them) are really small, and can easily be choke hazards

also have to see where i will put the nativity, because those pieces are breakable too Chat Icon

Same here...

I usually dont put ornaments on the lower half of the tree, and if I do its the kind that dont break, and are hung with ribbon instead of hooks.
