Random Inspection Apartment Building

Just got home from work and there's a note from the management company stating that on Friday, 20 units will be randomly selected to be inspected. No where does it say that this is voluntary or what they are "inspecting" for.

Is this even legal? What are they looking for? Illegal pets or tennants?

Totally legal. They just come in and check and make sure the apt complex is up to code and not letting people live in slums. My old complex did it all the time. They used to pick my apt because it was always clean.

I do inspections for my company once every few months at all our buildings. i look at the following;

check appliances
check heating/cooling systems
check for cracks for mice
check hot/cold water
flush toilet/check pressure
look for leaks
look for mold
check paint, need to paint every 3 years
check electrical outlets
check all owner/landlord provided appliances, fixtures, etc (blinds, furniture, etc depending on what we provide)
check fixtures, locks, knobs, etc.

it seems like a lot but i am in and out of an apt relatively quickly.

Housing code in nyc (where all my buildings are, not sure if it is the same on long island)...landlord needs to repaint an apt every three years or when a tenant vacates and new one moves in, whichever is earlier.
