I got my new car about a month ago and I didn't have to pay any extra for the gold... Actually, I don't remember even having a choice

I got a new car, and we weren't selling the others at the time so i had to get new plates and had no choice.

When you get a new car/new registration you don't pay "extra" b/c it's already built into the cost of the registration which, presumably, is more than an old license plate being renewed.

I don't like them - I didn't like them in the 80s either!
We just bought a new car - we were able to keep our old plates (thankfully) - I had just renewed in July.

Both DH and I got our registration renewals in the mail back in May. For my car, I did not have the option at all to get the new orange plates. I am guessing this is because I have profession plates on my car.
for DH's renewal, he had the option to pay more for the new orange plates. He has standard issue plates.
For DH's new car last summer, it was a new registration, so he got the orange plates.

i have silver and he has dark blue.
we both got them when we renewed and i dont think it was that much more.

The '64-'65 yellow on dark blue plates are actually pretty cool looking. Why couldn't they have done that? Instead they copied the one from one of the ugliest periods in NY history..the bad old 70's and 80's. The blue on white plates from the 2000's were actually voted 3rd best out of the 50 states.

When I got my new car in Oct I was so disappointed to have to switch to the gold plates. I had vanity plates on my old car, which would have made no sense on the new one, so I had to go with the gold ones.

I dont know why they would charge them to get the new plates... everyone is going to have to change over at some point... when i got my car last May, i was forced to get the new plates because i had to renew my plates at the time
My DH changed his car a couple of months ago and was able to keep the same plates. I was so happy because they're the plates I have had since I arrived in the US (we switched our cars a few years ago).

If it was up to me i would have definitely stayed w/ the old ones... DH had his car transferred from his dad to himself and got new plates and when i bought my new car they gave me new plates... they are so ugly!!

I wish we could pay extra to get the old ones. Those new ones are just the ugliest things ever! I wonder how much money it cost the state to switch from old to new... totally necessary expense, of course.

I didn't read every post but I'll throw out that I actually like them! I'm growing to dislike the old plates now.
When they first came out I hated them but got a new car and figured I'd get some new plates to put on it. My brother pointed out that they're retro looking and I think that made me look at them differently and start to like them. My car is black and I don't think the plates "don't go" with it, but that's just me.
