Random question about how you look in pictures
Do you ever notice that when you look at yourself in the mirror and then look at a picture of yourself it's like 2 totally different people?
I swear to you- I just saw a picture of myself that someone sent me and I was like- what on earth? I swear that is NOT the girl I just saw in the mirror this morning. (At least I hope not!!)
It's like Two-Face from Batman! 
Seriously though- am I the only one?
What is causing this phenomenon?
Which is the accurate potrayal? The mirror or the photo? I am assuming camera angles, lighting, all that, contribute but it's so odd!!

I feel the same way. I think my reflection in the mirror looks like me. But pictures look like a totally different person.

I totally agree. I will look at myself in the mirror and think I look ok, but if I see a picture of myself I am totally disgusted most of the time.

I could be wrong here, but I believe the more "accurate" portrayal of you is in pictures - meaning that's what people see when they look at you .. when you look in the mirror, you're seeing the mirror image of yourself so it's almost the opposite, you know?
That said, some people are more photogenic than others - I've seen really pretty women who don't look great in pictures, even though when we all look at them, they look beautiful, KWIM?

Happens to me all the time.
Just this morning I put on a new outfit and said to myself "hey I look nice today..this shirt makes me look thinner."
DH takes pics of me and DS at his school and I look like a big blue whale. 
I also hate hearing my voice on video or voicemail.

So I googled it.
Here is one answer from a photographer....not sure how true this is:
Thats because the lens of a camera is different than the lens that covers our eyes. The camera lens is convex and while it adjusts to let light in, it only has a certain level until it reaches capacity, unlike our eyes, which have pupils which dilate to let the proper amount of light in to clearly distinguish an image.
Like I said- who knows how true this is- but I pray it is. Because if the world sees me as I see myself in pictures... I had better invest in a bag for my head ASAP!!

Ugh, me too!! I always cringe when ever I hear my voice on a recording.
As for the pic/mirror thing, I usually look better in pics so I hope that's how I appear to people!!

This happens to me all the time. I wonder if I have a distorted view of myself? I think I look ok and then when I see the pictures I wonder were the extra 30lbs and double chin came from!!!

ME TOO! I HATE myself in pics, the only pics I ever liked were ones Angelica Glass took of DH and I. Actually I just changed my avatar yesterday for the first time in years because DH and I haven't taken a new pic together in almost 2 YEARS because I hate myself in pics

I have heard the theory that we are used to the mirror image of ourselves, so the real image seems strange. at least that's what I'm telling myself

This is so true!! I never trust how I look in the mirror if we are going somewhere where I know my picture will be taken. I drive DH nuts because I make him take a picture on the digital camera to make sure I look alright.
