Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
Is it by the number of degrees someone has?
Is it their street smarts or common sense? Or maybe a combo of both...
For example: I've met some of the smartest human beings I know of. I'm talking nuclear physicists but they lack ALL common sense.
Would they be considered smart because of their "book smarts" or stupid due to their lack of "common sense"?
How do you measure intelligence ?

I think "intelligence" is too broad a word. There are many different forms of intelligence.

That's my point. There are so many different ways to measure it... Hence I ask, how do YOU measure someones intelligence? KWIM?

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
If someone has a Ph.D., I usually think they are brilliant.....Many of the attorneys I work with not only have their JD, but PhDs as well and they impress the heck out of me....So, I guess I measure intelligence by degrees. But that isn't really fair because there are many people out there who are just as, or more, intelligent, but just chose not to go to college.
So basically, I don't know what I'm talking about....I'm not so intelligent, I guess

I tend to think people are smart if they're either really creative or really articulate. (Basically the things I'm not!)
I definitely don't base intelligence on # of degrees. To me a PhD is more a sign of perseverance than intelligence.

i would have to agree with this, especially since i am neither very creative or articulate, things i strive to be.
i honestly think that most of the time, i based my impression of someone's intelligence on whether or not i feel that they are "as smart" or "smarter" than me.
is it possible that intelligence is truly subjective? i think that it is possible that someone who is "dumb" would think someone who is "average" very intelligent, because they only have themselves to compare to. and what about someone who is "extremely" intelligent? do they think that someone who is "above average" i merely "intellectually dull"?

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
By their depth.
With some people my conversations with them reach a certain limit - certain topics I just can't explore with them.
I find that people *I* think are the most intelligent are those that have depth to their thinking and emotions.
That, and a good sense of humor is always a good mark for intelligence.

I DON'T measure someone's intelligence in any one way. I don't identify with this larger category of just "intelligent." Are you asking me what I value more? Or are you asking me if I only think book smarts = smart or street smarts = smart? They both do. If I say someone is "smart," it could mean one of 100 different things - street smart, book smart, well educated, etc.
I don't think one has to be educated to be intelligent, though you certainly can be both educated and smart. I also don't think every well-educated person lacks common sense.
I don't choose to measure "intelligence" in any one way. It depends on the context and to whom I'm referring.
I think this question just confuses me b/c I don't think about intelligence as meaning just one thing -- therefore I can't say I measure intelligence in just one way.
Does that make sense? Probably not.

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
I don't judge or make assumptions about anyone’s intelligence until I get to know them better. just b/c someone doesn't have a college degree, does not mean they're dumb. and just b/c someone has a Doctorate, doesn't mean I automatically put them on a pedestal.

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
It's funny you should mention this because this was a topic of conversation I had with some friends yesterday.
I do not agree with the fact that intelligence is measured by the amount of degrees a person has, nor do I agree it makes them smarter than a person who doesn't. Experience is what matters. I know people who have their Masters and are complete idiots.
I was recently told I needed to have either a BA, Masters or be enrolled in Grad School in order to be an Admin Asst. I find that RIDICULOUS!!!
Being book smart, doesn't necessarily mean they are smart in other areas.

I most certainly think that makes sense! Ironically, I think in your confusion, you've answered my question! For you, it's a multitude of things that you base someone's intelligence on. I have to agree.

A good mixture of IQ and EQ...the ability to grasp concept (whether behavioral or technical) and apply it...ability to retain information and access it for use.
I do think its subjective though.

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
I just assume that nobody is as intelligent as me....
I usually equate intelligence with the ability to solve a problem. That takes creative thinking, looking at things from different angles, intuition, experience, etc. A Phd means you are good at regurgitating what you've been told over the semester. Good memory doesn't always equal intelligence.
Albert Einstein dropped out of High School. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs (CEOs of Microsoft and Apple) dropped out of college. I still consider them intelligent.

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
I don't think I consciously do.
I think it's something you just observe through interactions...how quickly a person understands a concept...how easily the perform certain tasks...
I don't think intelligence has ANYTHING to do with education. that is KNOWLEGE, which is different and attainable by anyone that can learn to read (a mark of basic intelligence IMO).

I know tons of idiots with Master's and Phds.
The most intelligent people I know are well spoken, well written, worldly, have a fantastic sense of humor, quick on their feet (in terms of arguing a point clearly and well), and have decent social skills. I admire people like that and consider them smarty-pants.

I think you're wrong about this. While I agree that those with a doctorate are not necessarily the most intelligent, and that it has more to do with being self-disciplined and motivated, the purpose of the dissertation is to do original research and look at a specific problem in a new and unique way that adds to the literature. In many cases the topic of the dissertation is not touched upon AT ALL during the doctoral coursework, so it is not at all regurgitation.
What you are talking about is a term paper. There is a big difference between a term paper and original research.

I know a guy since we were kids. He is brilliant. He is a career Naval Officer at the moment. Naval Intelligence. Highest security clearance possible.
But he is an azz hole. He is constantly trying to prove how much smater he is than anyone he come in contact with. Like I said he IS brilliant. No common sense, no people skills so is he intelligent? Hmmm.
That's a good example of how there are different kinds of intelligence. He may score low on emotional intelligence, and high on an IQ test.

True, I wasn't thinking of the research part of it. There is definitely intelligence behind the research, since you are solving a problem.
