Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
personally, i measure intelligence more by common sense then anything. i grew up in a "blue collar" family, on a small farm.... so to me, i realize a degree or degrees don't mean much if a person can't function in the real world.

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
I noticed that before I got my degree I got different reactions from different people. Some assumed I had a degree because of how "smart" I was. My opinions were not taken seriously by many until AFTER I got my degree. Then I was almost considered an equal.

By their depth.
With some people my conversations with them reach a certain limit - certain topics I just can't explore with them.
I find that people *I* think are the most intelligent are those that have depth to their thinking and emotions.
That, and a good sense of humor is always a good mark for intelligence.
I agree.

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
at work, I'm knee deep in PhDs (I also am one), and I can tell you some are REALLY bright, and others are well......
what defines intelligence to me is having worldly knowledge, and an ability to simplify complex ideas and convey them to others.
usually the bright ones will walk over, look at a problem we're all grappling over, and shug their shoulders and say, well, why not try X? After all, Y is this, and Z is that... And all of the sudden, everything is clear to all of us.
Also, even if they're scientists, they'll also easily be able to enter an academic conversation about culture, politics, history, art.... they're well rounded
I only know a couple of those amazingly bright people....

Re: Random Thought of the Day: How do you measure intelligence?
if they agree with me...
i think it's very subjective. I consider myself intelligent and my sisters, and my parents are brillant- but we all have different kinds of intelligence. You can't say it's a couple of things.
But honestly, I only really notice if someone is NOT intelligent based on their behaviour and words.
