RAST allergy testing
Is it possible to get false positive results? We were away this weekend so I just got a message from our ped saying that he tested positive for egg whites, milk, beef, and pork. The milk and eggs were things that I was expecting, but he's never had any sort of reaction to beef or pork that I've noticed.

Re: RAST allergy testing
Anyone? I have an appointment with an allergist next week, but our ped said to avoid these foods for now. On a scale of 1-6 he was a 5 for milk and eggs and a 4 for pork and beef.

Re: RAST allergy testing
Never heard of a false positive on a RAST test.
We always do the skin test, followed by the blood work. With Emma her skin test has always been right on. The blood work just kind of told us the severity of the skin test.
I do know that you don't have to have a reaction the first time you eat something. With Emma, she can have things several times before she has a reaction.

Our allergist doesn't work the scale that way but it looks pretty serious.
Follow your peds advice with advoidance. Your allergist will direct you as far what you should be doing with Epi Pens (although with a milk and egg allergy that high I'm sure you carry one already).

Re: RAST allergy testing
Thanks! We haven't had the skin test yet. It's just odd because he's eaten beef and pork lots of times and I've never noticed any symptoms at all. He loves ham and eats hamburgers too. I'll have to ask about the epi pen. I just carry around benadryl and that has worked in the past.

It's not really odd. My DD has a pretty serious allergy to rice. She ate it all the time in infant jar food. It wasn't until we had the skin/blood test that we knew she was allergic. Now if she eats rice she vomits and her asthma symptoms act up.
I'm sure you'll be getting an Epi Pen. We carry those and Benadryl wherever we go.
Good luck!! FM if you ever have any questions.

Re: RAST allergy testing
I think the blood tests are very inaccurate. My dd's results were way off from her true allergies. My ped called me back saying she was off the charts for wheat and soy and she's FINE with both.
I find the skin tests to be much more accurate.

One of the allergists we saw said that the skin tests are far more accurate than the blood tests. She said a lot of people show alleriges in the blood but many people don't actually have a reaction, which is what the skin test is for.
I hope you get some answers soon. I completely understand how frustrating it is.

Re: RAST allergy testing
Thanks guys! I hope the blood tests were off too. It's been hard enough eliminating milk and eggs. I hope he can still eat beef and pork. I'm actually looking forward to our appointment next week so hopefully we'll have some more answers.
