Re: Really need your help girls
Does she have trouble standing? If not, here are my suggestions. And before I begin, to you guys!
Hostessing in a restaurant Babysitting School Aide Retail without the register (not Kohl's b/c supposedly they don't offer health benefits) House cleaning
Also, has she thought about selling the house and downsizing? Or is it possible to take in a tenant?

Re: Really need your help girls
These are great ideas. I'm going to make a list!
Hopefully I can help my mom get this in motion before my day job starts in a few weeks. (I;'m going back to tutoring for now, part time, but good money)

The thing with the house is this. My sister and BIL are her tenant. Their "rent" covers the mortgage, thank god. if she downsizes to a 1 fam, she loses that income, so it may be ebst to stay where we are for now. Plus we mostly own this house (mortgage is a small portion of the eq) and the taxes are low b/c it's queens.

Re: Really need your help girls
for you Jenn. I know how crappy this situation is and I TRULY feel for you and your Mom
I was also thinking of receptionist, I see a few people posted that already.. its at a desk all day, you can use a headset, not strenuous at all - and usually a decent salary overall
I'll keep thinking

Do receptionists need a lot of computer work, or do they jsut greet people?

I think it depends on the office/job/company ..
I know at my firm (mind you we're a HUGE firm) the receptionists are 99.9% on the phone all day .. a few of them do computer work, (scheduling conf. rooms and meetings sometimes) but really they are there purely to field calls and direct them to the approrpriate party..
But in a smaller company, you are right - it might be more of a secretarial/receptionist position involving PC work

It depends. If it's mostly phone and switchboard related they will train her on the board. If it's a 4 line phone it could be very simple and it a company would be looking for someone who was presentable who had an upbeat personality. Some recept positions require computer skills but she may even start with a simple job and learn some skills so she could move ahead and get paid more. It would be great for her self esteem to get out there and meet people.

Re: Really need your help girls
My mom can;t hold onto anything. She just dropped and broke her grandmother's dish and it fell on my favorite mug and both shattered
I feel so abd for her.
I suggested receptionist to her and she really ahtes the idea. She's not confident enough. But she's gonna ahve to stop shooting things down
Between not working for 33 years and the way my dad treated her, she ahs zero confidence. This is going to be a baby steps process.
I wish she didn't have to work. I don't really mind supporting her, and even if she gets a job I'm sure we'll still have to help her, but I think it would be good for ehr anyway to get a job and bring in some money even just to build up her confidence level

Re: Really need your help girls
I understand her hesitaiton. It sounds like her confidence has been broken down a lot. Remind her that everyone has to start somewhere and starting something new is daunting. Don't we all wish we could get past the first month at a new job just already knowing everything? Has she tried a local business like a real estate agency or a bank? Michaels or AC Moore? Even a place like St. John's or Queens College may need help in the office part, making copies, answering phones, etc.

Re: Really need your help girls
What type of work did your dad do? legally she gets half of his retirement, so it may not be too long that she has to work. i would say take a civil service exam for secretarial jobs. they usually involve light computer stuff--word/excel, etc. i would start training her to use a computer at home. worst comes to worst, she can sell the house and live off of the profit for a few years, and hopefully by then she can start taking out of your dad's retirement. she's lucky to have gotten the house--usually you have to buy out the other spouse.

She agve up support in order to get the house. ohterwise she would have gotten support and would ahve ahd to buy him out of the house. We figured this was better, because a bird in the hand..etc..my dad is not the most reliable person, and he would quit his job just to spite her and he's bad about paying up.
My dad;s only 54 and I don't know when he's gonna retire, so it's a lot of years til retirement age. Plus my dad does not make a lot, so I don't think it will be a lot..but you're right, it's something, so working may not be really long term

if it were me, i would sell the house immediately and have a really good financial advisor invest the profit to use as retirement. she has no social security in her name from not working, and if she is splitting your dad's retirement which might not be a lot she should think about 10 or 20 years down the line. she can probably qualify for low-income housing since she is without a job or a low-income job. i'll think about this more. i would definitely do civil service exams though. does she have any health insurance right now, or is that a priority?

Re: Really need your help girls
Jen, you might want to research programs for women who are re-entry job seekers. There are programs out there, but she may have to have a certain income to qualify. I will see if I can find anything for you.

Re: Really need your help girls
Just thought of another for your Mom - what about a receptionist in a hair salon? I don't think she would have to use a computer and they don't use a cash register at mine (just a money drawer).
AC Moore also sounds like a good idea too!

Re: Really need your help girls
Depending on her educational background, what about trying to get into the DOE as a paraprofessional or school aide? I am not sure how many college credits you need to be a para but I don't think you need many, and she'd be able to sit for a lot of the day. And the aides only need a high school diploma.
