Really weird and maybe gross question
Anyone ever experience the phenomenon of asparagus pee?
I was having a discussion about this last night with some ladies.

Quite an experience it is!
And you would think that after eating asparagus, it would take some time to work it's way thru your system, but no... it's quick! Take a bite, go pee, and immediately your pee stinks!

Actually yes.  I took asparagus pills once in college (don't ask) and it made my pee so green, it was disgusting and I never took them again.

The weird thing is that everyone's pee smells after eating asparagus but only some people notice it.
Something like 75% of the population is blissfully unaware of asparagus pee.

Asparagus, a green vegetable belonging to the lily family, has one notorious side effect for some diners who eat enough of it. Within a half-hour of asparagus consumption, some people notice their urine has acquired a very pungent odor, often compared to rotting cabbage, ammonia or rotten eggs. The effects of asparagus on urine are generally fleeting and harmless, but it's not necessarily the consumer's finest hour, bodily excretion-wise.
The good news is that asparagus does not affect everyone. Studies conducted on the "asparagus urine" phenomenon (aren't you glad you didn't volunteer!) indicate that roughly 40 to 50 percent of those tested developed the distinctive odor. Surprisingly enough, there is also a segment of the population who cannot smell the sulphurous fumes of asparagus-laced urine. It is believed that both the generation of the odoriferous urine and the ability to smell it are based on genetics. Only those with a certain gene can break down the chemicals inside the asparagus into their smelly components, and only those with the proper gene can smell the results of that chemical breakdown.

When we've eaten asparagus, it's traditional for us to yell from the bathroom "Damn asparagus!!"

When I was a kid my mom would make us eat asparagus, I do remember this "phenomenon".
I haven't eaten asparagus in ages and have no plans to.

The funny (/sad) thing is that i never noticed it until DH said something about it. So, i had gone my whole life not realizing it, but now for the last 7 years, its been clear as day

It is widely believed by scientists that everyone gets "asparagus pee", but, only a certain percentage have the ability to smell it (the lucky ones I guess). Something to do with receptors in the brain.

I warn DH to stay out of the bathroom when I have this!
My friend's husband just ate asparagus for the first time last week. He said the smell was so bad that he had to flus mid-pee because it smelled so bad!

My understanding is that scientists have identified a gene that allows people to break down asparagus enough to cause the urine to smell -- and that not everyone has that gene. In addition to that, there is also a portion of people who lack the ability to smell the distinctive odor.

This is maybe even more disgusting -- in my family, my mom, cousin and I used to call asparagus "pee smell" -- but that didn't stop us from eating it...
