We have a toyota prius (rear wheel)
Ummmm Never heard of a prius being rear wheel. What year? I was pretty darn certain is only a front wheel.
Here nor there but AWD/4WD does not make it 'safe' to drive. I used to do auto claims and I had an X5 hit a sign and told me it was the business owner's fault for placement (well off the road) because afterall, his X5 was a AWD so it CAN'T possibly been HIS fault!
Snow means slow down regardless of vehicle.
I drove a mustang for years. You learn to control it or it controls you. meh

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
I have an Infiniti G35 sedan With 200lbs of sand bags in the trunk and it's still all over the road. I love that car, just not in the winter. With a baby on the way it's time for an AWD car.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
I used to have a Mustang, and I fared better in the snow thank some people with fwd. I put extra weight in the trunk and got good snow tires, and I knew my car well enough to know how it handled. One of the first things I learned with that car was how to handle in unfavorable conditions-I actually went to an empty parking lot and forced myself to slide out a few times so I knew how to recover. When I had to drive in the snow, I took it slow and knew my limits-never got stuck once.
It's impractical to say people should avoid RWD because of snow a few months out of the year. I loved that car, and I'd get another in a heartbeat!
ETA: Having four wheel drive helps you get started, but it doesn't mean you can still drive as you would on a dry, sunny day. I've seen accidents involving all kinds of cars, and plenty of different automobiles stuck. It's more the driver than the car IMO.

Re: Rear Wheel car and snow
People shouldn't drive white cars in the snow because it might be mistaken for a snow pile.

DH has a rear wheel drive car, but he doesn't drive it in the snow. He uses it more in the spring/summer, etc
