Recommend a sewing machine.
What would you recommend for a beginner? My mom used the sewing machine a lot when I was kid but I was terrified of needles so I never learned. I am ready to tackle this new hobby. I want to make cushions with the fabric I have left over from my wedding. And I have ideas for window curtains and maybe some outfits too.  Thanx!

Sears always has a good selection of sewing machines and you can get them cheaper there than most fabric and craft stores.
This one seems like it would probably be good for you. Lots of stitches (plus buttonhole) with easy to use manual controls.

Thanks! I have a lot of questions but I figure I can just read the manual when I get it.
Well, here's a stupid questions. Can you use that on any table top? Is there a recommended height? Does it make a lot of vibration when it's on because I was going to put it next to my laptop?

you can use most of these on a table top these days (i don't think i've seen one built into a table in a store in decades). sewing machines do make vibrations when you use them, but in theory, your laptop would be off and closed when you are using the sewing machine so it shouldn't be an issue. you would just want to use it on a table that is set up properly so that you can snake the foot pedal down onto the floor.

A comfortable height will depend on your height, ideally you want your forearms and wrists to be straight and at a 90 degree angle from your upper arm. The easiest way to achieve this is to use an adjustabe chair.
If you end up enjoying the sewing and use your machine alot I would recommend getting an extension table to put around the free arm of your machine. This will give ou much more surface to run your fabric along and will also give you much more control.
You should not have any issues with the vibration from the machine affecting your laptop. Many machines these days hook up directy to your computer so you can d/l embroidery patterns to the machine. I have my machine and my computer on the same table and my computer is always on.
