recommend your basic SLR camera
so i'm biting the bullet and buying a SLR camera. mrs. patticakes and babydreams....feel free to laugh at me!
i've done a search on here and wrote down some ideas of what people said. i also read a consumer reports that reviewed them.
i'm looking for a basic SLR, not an advanced one. decently priced--preferably under $500.
besides the actual camera, is there anything else i have to buy?

Nikon D-60. I use it on auto mode most of the time 
Probably about the cheapest with a 18-55VR Lens is about $700 though. If you do get the D-60 make sure you get a VR(vibration reduction) lens because it makes a difference.
I hear that Canons are less $$.

As far as brands I prefer Nikon and Canon. The most important thing to consider are your lenses, you can buy a great camera body but if you buy poor quality lenses you will not get good results. For each lens you will also want an UV filter, filters are cheap and protect your lens. If you drop the lens you'll be much happier to break the filter than a $1000 lens.
I trust this site a lot for reviews on cameras and lenses.
ETA: you may want to check out used equipment, B and H is a reliable place to purchase used equpt.

I have a Nikon D60 and LOVE it. I shopped around and ended up getting the best deal from Best Buy. It was on sale for lower than I had ever seen it anywhere else.

I know a lot of the girls on here have the D40 and love it. Circuit City has it right now for $449.

I have a Nikon D40. When we get the money I def want to upgrade to a higher model but for basic stuff it is great.

I truly believe that any of the SLR camera will take fabulous pics - its all about the user and finding the right settings. That said  , I would recommend the Nikon D40.

The cheapest of the Nikon is the D40.
I say wait until after Thanksgiving. Stores and online deals are good.
I saved $$$$ last year when I got my D40x (now replaced by the D60)
