Recycling cans and bottles

Right now we recycle by putting all cans and bottles in our recycle trash cans but it seems like our garbage men just put it all in the back of the truck anyway. I am starting to feel very guilty about the amount of waste we are creating. I'd like to start returning the cans and bottles to the supermarket. Does anyone do this? Is it a major pain in the ass?

We used to but stopped because it was just that - a major pain in the ass.
The machines are always broken, it's gross and smelly in those rooms, your hands get all sticky and gross.
It was just too much work for the little we got back.

Do you not have a separate recycling day? We put out our recyclables on a different day- and yes they get thrown in the truck of course, but it's not mixed with any garbage since garbage is a different day

Re: Recycling cans and bottles

I always bring back the cans and bottles to the store. They take the money from the deposit when you purchase the bottles, so I might as well get it back.
I bring my kids and they do it, and I let them keep the money they get back.

We usually bring them back when we have about 2 full bags so it is not a pain. We also go early in the morning when the store is empty, and the bins are not full.
We also bring wipes to clean our hands afterwards.

There is a separate day but doesn't seem to matter. All the trash seems to go in the back of the truck mixed together. Our village just switched services last year. The old one had a door on the side of the truck for recyclables but the trucks for the new company have no such compartment.

Too much work for the amount of money you get back. We used to do it and stopped as exactly what Nell said.

We started returning our cans and bottles last year as a fundraiser for DS baseball team. We go to a bottle return store, it's quick and easy. You just dump everything into a rack and they rake it into the machine.

We have can places by me. You bring them the bags and they count them for you and give you money. They are all over by me but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one on LI. Might be something to look into.

It's a major pain in the ass. You lug all the containers there and put 3 in and the bin is full. Takes forever to find someone to empty it. Not worth the $1.60 for an hour's worth of your day. I think the ineptness is built into the system to discourage us from getting our nickel back.

It's lifechanging lol. Our local place even sends coupons for 20% or 10% more cash back! And they do all of the work!

That is awesome, maybe that could be an incentive for more people to recycle.

We have separate days here so recycling in the neighborhood all goes in together. There was a time when I was saving bottles to cash in. It became annoying, tedious, stinky and not worth it for the nickels. You can also see if any boy scout/girl scout groups like to take them in your area. I did that for a bit. Then I found a coworkers dad that was obsessed wit it. Now, it just goes out on recycling days. I would be annoyed if I watched them mix it with regular garbage!

Re: Recycling cans and bottles

There is a guy who comes around in a box truck every recycle day and goes through our can and pulls out any can or bottle that has a deposit on it.
He has a truck filled with bags of bottles and cans he collects out of people's recycle bins.
I assume he makes a lot of money doing this

My parents have a lady that comes around their neighborhood and does the same thing. They actually leave the bag just inside the front gate for her and the lady comes and takes it.

I don't return my bottles. We have minimal since I buy gallon jugs of water, and refill our stainless steel bottles with it. Too much of a hassle to return them for .05

Re: Recycling cans and bottles

Yes, I recycle cans and bottles. It is more money here, so it is worth it. There are two kinds: 8 cents for one type and 25 cents for the other. If you have a case that holds the recycles it is about 2-3 Euros for case. You pay for that in advance.

So for example let’s say I get a case of 12 water bottles. Those water bottles are 8 cents + the case. So you pay about 3-4 Euro in deposit, so I of course want that back.

The bottles that are 25 cents (some water bottles) and that can add up. On average it is about 20 Euro a month for me, so I want that back. Plus there is nowhere else to really put them.

Other glass bottles are organized by color and you have to recycle them. You don’t get any money back, but there is nowhere else to put them.

Seems the same way here where you are paying for the deposit fee when you buy the item.
If it was easier to return them, I think more would do it to get that money back.

We put it out on recycling days. Rumor has it the town will ticket you if you throw the recyclables in with the regular garbage. Not sure if it’s true, but our local government has a lot of time on their hands so it wouldn’t surprise me.

It used to be more difficult in that you had to return it to the exact store you bought it from. So if you bought it from Stop and Shop then you couldn’t return it to King Kullen. They changed that.

They should definitely raise the price of the deposit. I’m now thinking about that Seinfeld episode where they drove to Michigan.

Do you live near Bethpage?
If you do this place is amazing. You don’t have to sort and you just drop off the bag of bottles and cans and they give you the cash.

We don't bother recycling. Never have and never will. MY DH says he had more to worry about then recycling.

We have to bring ours to the actual facility because there’s not trash pickup, which is a hassle, so when I don’t have the time I end up just throwing them out, but I do try to bring them when I can. I don’t think the facilities and garbage trucks recycle as much as we think though

Yes I do it.
For me it’s less
About getting the money back and more about making sure the plastic/glass/aluminum is actually recycled. & not sent to a landfill.

I do it at Target. Generally it’s quick. Takes less than 5 minutes. I usually do about 5 dollars worth at a time.

Do we know for sure it's not getting sent to a landfill after those machines crush it though?

I have heard that a lot of times it all gets sent to the landfill anyway whether you recycle it at your curb on the town recycle day or use the machines in stores.

Technically the town is supposed to recycle it as well- if you put it out on the designated day like we do but some people say that they don't do what they are supposed to after they take it.
